Guys,

I figure I need a gearbox oil change as I haven't done one since I bought my E30. It is a Getrag box on a 318i '93

I figured ATF would be OK and Murphy & Gunn confirmed this. However I understand that this could cause the box to be noisy.  The car was imported in '98 & as it did virtually only motorway miles in the UK, the box is a bit noisy in 5th gear.  I don't want to make it even noisier with ATF.

Can anybody advise?

Thanks in advance

Hugh

I'd go with the ATF especially over the winter. Getrag boxes can be noisy anyway - but I'm surprised your hearing anything in 5th.

I had a mechanic friend drive it - he says he'd seen it in several E30s with getrag boxes.

Supposedly the 5th and 1st use some communal parts in the back of the box and some output bearings can become worn from spending much time in 5th. Could be imagining things but both he & I figure the box is noisy in 5th.

Anyway if there are no other suggestions I'll go for ATF

Thanks

Hugh
