Ive been running an E30 320i the last few months and its performed very well however...

Occasionally, when in heavy traffic, the car will shudder forward from stationery in first gear but once i get moving its fine. I suspect i may need to replace the clutch/master cylinder but was wondering if this is an expensive job. Also am I right? This happened on 2 prevoius E30's i had and clutch was always spot on. It can be a bit embarrassing in traffic.

Secondly, although the 6 cylinder sounds lovely, when driven from cold the engine makes an awful irratating noise as you accelerate and sometimes it it doesn't go away at all. I know you might say its the tappets but im not too sure. It sounds similiar to the noise a kids bike makes with a piece of card flickering against the spokes.

Just wondering what some of your thoughts might be before i get it sorted by a decent mechanic or have a go myself.

My experience is that the clutch in both E30s and E36s tends to do this, especially when hot. I suspect, though I can't be certain that it's connected with the flexible pipe section of the clutch hydraulics which goes soggy when hot.

Alright, so what your saying is that this is more of a 'characteristic' of the E30's rather than a problem? Should i just forget about it?...i  generally just pump the clutch 3or4 times while in neutral just before i move onwards!

I hate to say it .... but my E30 318i has no problems with this issue. You might want to ask the same question over on www.e30owners.com/forums amd see if anyone there has come across it.

If you can alleviate the clutch issue by pumping the pedal while in neutral, I would imagine that it's a hydraulic issue; the slave cylinder is known to leak. The slave cylinder can be changed as a DIY job.

The clutch-judder the E36's (and maybe E30, I don't know) suffer when hot is related to the non-asbestos material used in the friction plates. This cannot be alleviated by pumping the clutch pedal.

Can't be of much help with the noise but it does not sound like tappets to me.

Could be a leak from the exhaust manifold, either a crack or a gasket problem.

the clutch issue is either the slave or master cylinder

as for the noise : is the cowl around the radiator in place? it may be fowling on the fan?

i second this..definately sounds like manifold problem

as for the shudder id get the slave cylinder checked first most likely this is the problem as its common on e30`s(cheap an easy to fix)
