BMW driver Robert Kubica has described his own team's goal of winning a formula One race this season as "impossible."

The Polish racer has flatly rejected the notion that BMW can overcome the might of frontrunners Ferrari and McLaren and capture their first victory.

Kubica has even gone further and cast doubt on the conventional pre-season forecast that BMW will be leading the pack behind the two F1 powerhouses.

"To win a race we have to have the fastest car in the field," Kubica told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

"For the moment we are not there, but we are working on it and we will see if we can achieve that."

But the 23-year-old says BMW's target for 2008 is too ambitious.

"At the moment it is impossible for us to win a race, but in Formula One it can turn around so quickly," he said.

Kubica said BMW needs to first establish itself as a consistently fast team before taking the next step.

"The goal is to improve each season. Last year we were third so the next target is very high.

"We must demonstrate that last year was not just a fluke, that we know how to make fast cars."

However he said BMW's stated objectives will not affect the way he performs this year.

"I don't think about the targets. My only goal is to drive as fast as possible and make the most of the car, which could be finishing sixth or winning the race," he said.

"I will make sure I give everything I can and then we will see where we are."

Kubica remains philosophical about his own chances of success.

"Every driver wants to win but I know that it might not happen this year, or next year, or ever," he said.

"I hope that I can win some time but if I cannot, then that's life."
