Topic: E36 convertible rear plastic window Posted: 15-November-2003 at 21:35 |
Hi, the rear plastic window on my beemer has split. I phoned bmw up to see how much it would be to replace and they quoted £340 plus vat.
Does anyone know anywhere cheaper to get a replacement window? Or has anyone ever fitted one themselves before and can give me advice on how to do it.
thanks

some people are lucky enuff to have a rear window thats fitted in with a zip ( need a tool to move the zip ) if you are like me and yours is sewn in , it seems maindealer prices are the cheapest !!!
i phoned all the people in the autotrader and they all wanted over 300 to replace it !! apparently they have to take the hood off to fit the window , which is why its so expensive !!!
let me no if u find it cheaper anywhere else as mines got a bullet hole in it !!!

Do you actually need a tool? anyway, the zipped rear window BMW # 54.31.8.207.803 is about £250 all in, are you a paid up BMWCC member? If so find a dealer in your area that offers BMWCC discount and claw back another 10% off this price. If your not a BMWCC member i suggest you join, ie £35 joining fee, instant £25 back from discount on part alone!
Not all dealers will give discount though, my local $tealer don't, but i don't hardly use them anyway for that reason!

i dont think you can buy the tool to undo it ( maindealer only ) , you might be able to buy one from snap on , or euro car parts might sell em ! only guessing tho , if you cant buy one anywhere , i think a hood supplier would be able to source one and sell it to you . YOU LUCKY BUGGER...

the removal of the rear window for the zipped type is easy. refitting is more tricky. you will need a zip dooer upper! this comes in the box along with the new window and a trim tool if you buy from bmw. i have replaced quite alot of these, like everything, more you do easier it is! i have got a tool to do zip up.

The plastic black trim is part of the new window, the hood fabric is tucked under this.

In your opinion, Do you think replacing the window is a ok do-it-yourself job? How do you go about taking the old one out?
I am tempted to have a go at it.

my m8 did his on his e30 and he,s a complete retard !!! i mean he doesnt even have the ability to change his own oil !
from what i understand it will only fit in one way and was told to let the roof down a bit to take some of the tension off it ( makes it easier to work the zip).
just spoke to him he said on the e30 he just had to untuck the plastic or rubber seal ( cant remember what it was ) and undo the zip , VOILA !
