I'm planning on getting a new laptop since my current one is 10 years old and running win98.

However, I'm wondering if the copy of the BMW ETK I have(for Win98) will install on Win XP or Vista?

If not, I guess I can always use realoem.com, but having the ETK installed locally is handy.

From what I can see on the Dell website, they seem to be offerring a choice of XP or Vista pr-installed.

Kevin, last thing first, Vista is a bit flaky in spots and a lot of big companies are looking at skipping it and waiting for the next one.  I have it installed on Mrs D's laptop and it can be a bit unpredictable (although improved since recently installing Service Pack 1 - SP1).  For that reason, unless you have a reason for particularly wanting Vista I'd recommend XP.

An app running on '98 SHOULD run on XP without any problem but if you have problems with a straight installation then you can try it in compatability mode.

Thanks Diarmuid,

I have heard similar things about Vista also, so was pleased to see Dell offering XP. I'll give the installation a try when I get it and see how it goes.

Regards,
Kevin

I've got ETK on the Mrs pc at home which is XP with no problems.  Bought from ebay and the seller provided good instructions on how to install etc.

Not sure what version of ETK but it is fairly new, i.e. around 2006 mark.

Peter - did you try Compatability Mode?  On your desktop, hit Start, All Programs and browse to the ETK, right click on the program name and select Properties.  One of the tabs is Compatability and if you tick the button for "Run this Program in Compatability Mode for:" the drop down list for previous operating system becomes accessible.  Choose whichever one your ETK is supposed to run with (probably '98 or win2k) it might work.  Worth a try.
