Hi

Thanks to nigel with advice on wash wipe stalk, job done and saved myself some dosh although steering wheel did have to come off and a few other things,  need more advice though I have noticed auto box fluid level is very low, I have TIS disc and it states that I have to fill it up from underneath and have the right box serial no, other auto cars I have had in the past I took the auto dipstick out and filled up there no prob, TIS disc o.k but not that much help, would be grateful for a bit of advice, if I have to jack it up then so be it but there must be a easier way plus it looks like going to my local rip off dealer for right oil.

Many thanks

Nick

What kinda 7er have you got?

If it is an E32 (I think that's right the one like the E39 5er) then it will most probably have a sealed for life Automatic Transmission.  This means that the Engineers at BMW believe that the box will never need an oil change during its life.

WRONG

Take it to an automatic transmissions specialist  for a service.  They will change the fluid and the filters, give you a new sump gasket and adjust any components as necessary.  This should cost around £150 inc tranny fluid.  Depending on the age of the car it will be worth getting done anyway.  Once my E60 is out of warranty it will be going straight to an Automatic Transmission Specialist in Glasgow for a service.

These tranny's are sealed so that you and I cannot add fluid to them easily.  It needs to be done under pressure I believe and when then car is up on a ramp.

Yup gone are the days when I used to (unfortunately a bit too regularly!) pour automatic transmission fluid down the dipstick of my old Senator.  My E39 and both my E60's had/have sealed for life autoboxes with no dipsticks.

HTH

Andrew

Hi

Car is E32 730i 1990, TIS disc does mention oil for life on certain 7 series but does not make it clear for E32, plus the fact if the oil is low then I would of thought it needs topping up as dipstick measure is low, box runs smoothly no prob at all could do without box service at £150 when it's o.k but then again this is my first BMW.

Thanks

Nick
