Preview: Formula BMW Europe, 22 - 24.8.08: Rounds 11 + 12, Valencia.

Double premiere for Formula BMW Europe.

Munich, 19 August 2008. A weekend of challenges awaits the 28 young drivers of Formula BMW Europe. Rounds 11 and 12 will be held against the backdrop of the Formula One GP on the newly created street circuit in the Spanish city of Valencia. For the drivers, a twofold premiere beckons: on the one hand the weekend marks the first street race on the European continent in the history of Formula BMW, and on the other hand none of the drivers has had a chance to glean any driving experience there. All the junior drivers will therefore be entering uncharted territory: “I have prepared for the race by watching videos of the Spanish Formula 3 race that was held there four weeks ago. I’ve also been on location and had a look at the circuit. The crucial thing is whether you can quickly master the details,” says Spaniard Daniel Juncadella (Eurointernational), who is currently in second place in the overall rankings.

The drivers – some of them just 15 years old – are setting great store by walking the circuit on Thursday morning. “In situations like that I memorise significant points and then use them as landmarks. That would be things like turning in when you see the disco advert, or braking at the big lamppost,” explains 16-year-old Spaniard Facundo Regalia. At the weekend it’s going to be a close-fought contest not just in the race but in the overall rankings too. Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez (Josef Kaufmann Racing) heads the points table with 250 ahead of Juncadella (200 points), Adrien Tambay (FR/Eifelland Racing,198) and Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing, 194). With 30 points being awarded for each win, it’s a very close contest.

In terms of safety, Formula BMW Europe is well equipped for the street circuit as well. The FORS safety seat specially developed by BMW allows the driver to be removed from the vehicle along with the seat in the event of an accident. This provides particular protection for the back in case of injury. Formula BMW, moreover, was the first entry-level series to make the HANS head and neck protection system mandatory for its drivers. Race director David Cartwright in Valencia sees to it that the safety regulations are strictly adhered to in the Formula BMW Europe races: “The close confines of the Valencia street circuit will represent a new challenge for the drivers. I believe it is important to ensure that at this stage of the drivers' careers basics such as obeying the yellow flags and general on-track behaviour are firmly instilled for the future."

Formula BMW may be broaching new territory in this street race, but it could almost be regarded as a home event. The series has had a very special association with Valencia for some time, with the licensing courses and scholarship qualifying being held at the Formula BMW Racing Center at the permanent race track for several years now. It was here that such talents as Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg were “discovered”. In the last two years, this Mediterranean city has also played host to the Formula BMW World Final. Several Formula BMW graduates, moreover, had their first experience of a BMW Formula One vehicle here: Ho-Pin Tung (CHN) in 2003, Marco Holzer in 2006 and Christian Vietoris in 2007.

Preview Valencia: Strong Spanish drivers in Formula BMW Europe.

08-20-2008 Press Release
Preview Valencia: Strong Spanish drivers in Formula BMW Europe.

On the Formula BMW Europe winners’ podium it’s most definitely a case of Spanish spoken. 17-year-old Daniel Juncadella from Barcelona has already been up there five times in this successful junior race series, and on the top step twice as the winner of rounds 9 and 10 in Budapest. Four pole positions, moreover, have earned the Spaniard extra points to secure him his current second place in the overall rankings. “Things are going pretty well,” says Juncadella, although the Italian Team Eurointernational driver still can’t quite believe his outstanding achievements so far. At any rate, it seems he can rely on his DNA, with motor racing a traditional forte of the Juncadella clan. Two of his uncles raced in Formula One and his father was Spanish Formula 3 champion.

It was the BMW Motorsport talent scouts who discovered Ramon Pineiro (Fortec Motorsport) of Barcelona for Formula BMW Europe. The 16-year-old took part in the 2007 scholarship qualifying in Valencia and earned a place in BMW’s junior scheme. He receives financial support to the tune of 75,000 euros and benefits from the BMW Education and Coaching Programme. As a rookie he lacks the necessary racing experience in a Formula car in this, his first season, but two pole positions in Silverstone provided dazzling evidence of his racing talent.

The Spanish capital of Madrid is home to Formula BMW Europe’s third Iberian contestant, 16-year-old schoolboy Facundo Regalia (Eurointernational). He played for the Real Madrid junior team before turning his full attention to motorsport. Born in Argentina, he moved to Madrid with his parents at the age of eight. Another “incomer” is Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez (Josef Kaufmann Racing), who is currently living with a Spanish host family in Madrid, where he attends school but is otherwise totally focused on motor racing. After six wins in ten races, he heads the overall rankings in Formula BMW Europe.

Shared nationality aside, these drivers all have one thing in common: they are excited at the prospect of their second “home event” of the year. After the season opener in Barcelona, the forthcoming races held as part of the European Grand Prix support programme will mark the second visit to Spain this year by Formula BMW Europe.

Qualifying: Formula BMW Europe, 22-24.8.08: Rounds 11 + 12, Valencia (ES).

08-22-2008 Press Release
Qualifying: Formula BMW Europe, 22-24.8.08: Rounds 11 + 12, Valencia (ES).

Kevin Breysse and Esteban Gutierrez take pole positions.

During qualifying for the first European street race in the history of Formula BMW, Kevin Breysse (FR/DAMS Team) delivered the best performance of all 28 drivers to take his first pole of the season in round 11 of Formula BMW Europe. On the 5.44 km circuit in Valencia, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing) claimed second place on the grid and Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing) third. The grid line-up for the 12th race of the season is determined by the second-fastest lap in qualifying. That puts Gutierrez at the front on Sunday, followed by Breysse in second position and Wittmann (P3).

It was only thanks to the sterling efforts of his team Josef Kaufmann Racing that overall leader Gutierrez was able to take part in qualifying at all. After he slammed into a wall during the morning’s free practice, the team had the car up and running again in a matter of hours.

The unluckiest driver of the morning was Spaniard Ramon Pineiro, who only managed one lap in free practice due to a technical problem, and thus went into qualifying with practically no experience of the circuit. He came away with positions 21 and 24 on the grid.

The 11th round of the season will take place on Saturday from 17.30 to 18 hrs and the 12th on Sunday from 9.20 to 9.50 hrs.

Kevin Breysse (FR, DAMS Team).
Round 11: pole position, round 12: 2nd on the grid. “What I really like is the fact that nobody knew the circuit, so it was an absolutely level playing field for everyone. It shows you the people who are quick on the uptake and can think themselves into the circuit. Before qualifying, my engineer said to me: ‘Aim for pole!’ That’s exactly what I did. Now I’m hoping for a good race. Before the weekend my best starting position was seventh. Naturally I’m really glad to be able to start right from the front.”

Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing).
Round 11: 2nd on the grid, round 12: 3rd on the grid. “From lap four on I was having serious problems with the brakes, which was definitely due to the incredible heat here. As a result I had to brake earlier on the track, and

that cost me time, of course. I adapted my driving style accordingly, and then on the final lap everything fell into place again and I managed to forge ahead to secure second place on the grid for the race on Saturday.”

Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing).
Round 11: 3rd on the grid, round 12: pole position. “After my accident in free practice, I held back a bit during qualifying. A street circuit demands extreme concentration of any driver. When you pass so close to a wall it really gets the adrenalin up. What is a real support to me is my strong team-mate. On the one hand it puts you under pressure, but on the other hand we benefit a lot from our shared data analysis. Marco and I naturally compare ourselves to each other and that gives us both a push.”

Formula BMW Europe, 22 - 24.8.08: Round 11, Valencia.

08-23-2008 Press Release
Sensational battle for the lead: Geronimi is the winner.

Tiago Geronimi (Eifelland Racing) of Brazil took the flag in a spectacular race on Valencia’s street circuit. The 11th round of Formula BMW Europe was dominated by nail-biting jostling for position from the first to the final lap. The leader of the rankings, Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing), kept Geronimi under pressure throughout the race, but the Brazilian ultimately claimed victory ahead of Gutierrez and Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing).

The first European street race in the history of Formula BMW took its toll on the drivers, with just 19 out of 28 starters making it to the finish. But the battle for the top positions in the rankings made for plenty of excitement. Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational) had to retire from the race, as did Adrien Tambay (FR/Eifelland Racing). Gleaning the biggest benefit from this was Wittmann, who managed to advance from fourth to second in the points. After the 11th of 16 races, Gutierrez leads with 274 points, ahead of Wittmann (214), Juncadella (200) and Tambay (198).

At the start Geronimi capitalised on the squabbling for positions by surging from fourth place to the front of the field. Polesetter Kevin Breysse (FR/DAMS Team) dropped back to fifth place at the start, and on lap nine was forced to retire after colliding with third-placed Facu Regalia (ES/Eurointernational). On the first lap, Juncadella’s car ended up in such an unfortunate position on the track after an accident that the safety car was immediately called out. Right to the very end of the race there were fierce battles in particular for the top positions. On lap nine Geronimi briefly ceded his lead to Gutierrez, but fought his way to his first victory in Formula BMW Europe after a mistake by Gutierrez on lap ten. Another Eifelland driver from Brazil – Henrique Martins – was best rookie after finishing fifth.

1st place Tiago Geronimi (BR/Eifelland Racing): “I’m over the moon about my first win. While Esteban was constantly breathing down my neck, I just tried to stay cool, make no mistakes and keep on the track. After the press conference the first thing I have to do is ring my father Luigi in Brazil. He will be incredibly happy about my win.”

2nd place Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing): “That was a race I’ll never forget: ten laps of full-on adrenalin! It was a tough battle for the lead with lots of overtaking. I was constantly looking for passing

opportunities. Over the radio I head that Juncadella and Tambay had retired, but I pushed that aside in my mind. I was just determined to win. In the end, what was crucial was that I was able to increase my overall lead.”

3rd place Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing):
“At the start Kevin instantly took the battle line, which meant that despite my better start I couldn’t get past him. It was Tiago in fourth place who was laughing all the way to the front. As on Friday, I was struggling with my brakes all the time. I’m sure that was evident from the outside. Because Daniel and Adrien didn’t finish, I’m now in second place. But it’s certainly not a case of schadenfreude. I would rather beat them out on the track.”

Results round 11:
1. Tiago Geronimi (BR/Eifelland Racing) 24:21.912
2. Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing) 24:22.049

Formula BMW Europe, 22 - 24.8.08: Rounds 11 + 12, Valencia.

08-24-2008 Press Release
Formula BMW Europe, 22 - 24.8.08: Rounds 11 + 12, Valencia.

Lights to flag victory for Esteban Gutierrez.

Following his second-placed finish of the previous day, championship leader Esteban Gutierrez (Josef Kaufmann Racing) prevailed against the other 27 Formula BMW Europe starters in Valencia. The 17-year-old Mexican beat his team-mate Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Kevin Breysse (FR/DAMS Team) by a clear distance. An accident involving Kyle Mitchell (ZA/AM-Holzer Rennsport) meant the race had to be stopped on lap eight out of ten. According to the regulations, the race results were based on the positions on lap eight as the race leader had already begun his ninth lap.

In the same mould as Saturday’s race, when Tiago Geronimi (BR/Eifelland Racing) pipped Gutierrez and Wittmann to the post to take his debut win, Sunday’s event was bristling with battles for position. At the start Gutierrez defended his pole position against Breysse, while Wittmann and Breysse spent many laps jostling for second place. On lap eight Wittmann managed to get past the French driver. At the back of the midfield, too, there were plenty of two-, three- and four-way battles going on. When Mitchell touched the wall on lap eight and his wrecked car blocked the course, the race had to be halted. The South African was shaken but uninjured and was able to get out of his car without assistance.

In the overall rankings after 12 out of 16 races, Gutierrez leads with seven wins and 305 points ahead of Wittmann (238). Behind them, Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational) and Adrien Tambay (FR/Eifelland Racing) are level-pegging with a tally of 216 each. With four races to go in Spa (5 -7.9.) and Monza (12-14.9.), Michael Christensen (DK/Double R Racing, 110) leads the rookie standings ahead of David Mengesdorf (DE/Mücke Motorsport, 104).

1st place Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing): “Before the race the team had decided I should have new brake pads, which is why I was struggling a bit with the brake balance on the first two laps. The struggle for positions behind me meant I could extend my lead. I just wanted to take home a clean race and not be thinking about ultimately winning the season, although I’m edging closer to that target.”

2nd place Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing):
“I achieved my overall target for this weekend: I’m now second in the standings. I’m not happy with the ending of Sunday’s race. It was difficult to pass Kevin. On the straights he was faster than me, but I knew that I would get the better of him in the corners.”

3rd place Kevin Breysse (FR/DAMS Team):
“All in all I’m pleased with this successful weekend for me and my team. On the front row of the grid twice, including one pole, and a podium place on Sunday isn’t bad at all. I didn’t spray too much of my champagne on the podium to make sure every member of the team gets a sip.”

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen:
“For the young drivers here in Valencia, this was their first race with solid walls alongside. Some of them underestimated the absence of large run-off zones, but it’s an experience the drivers had to go through. I’m basically very pleased that we have a strong field of participants this year. There’s a lot of highly promising talent among them.”

Results round 12:
1. Esteban Gutierrez (MX/Josef Kaufmann Racing) 18:08.667
2. Marco Wittmann (DE/Josef Kaufmann Racing) 18:15.073
