BMW aims to continue positive trend at home in Oschersleben.

25-08-2008 Press Release
Munich, 25th August 2008. For the BMW national teams rounds 15 and 16 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Oschersleben (DE) have the same significance as the German Grand Prix has for the BMW Sauber F1 Team. The five drivers travel to their home event held in the “Magdeburger Börde” region with a strong fighting spirit.

BMW Team UK driver Andy Priaulx (GB) is third in the championship, so being the best-placed BMW driver. The triple World Champion is still determined to battle his way back to the very top. With a Brands Hatch (GB) win under his belt, BMW Team Germany driver, Jörg Müller (DE), also showed his championship chances are still alive. Meanwhile BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Félix Porteiro (ES) and Alessandro Zanardi (IT) also recently displayed an improvement in performance. Carrying a rather low handicap weight of 30 kilograms, Müller’s team-mate, Augusto Farfus (BR), is also set to make his return to the WTCC podium. All in all the stage is set for a thrilling motor racing weekend at the ”Motorsport Arena Oschersleben”.

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
”Obviously, Oschersleben is a home race for all of us BMW drivers – no matter where we come from. My personal memories are of wins, and also the emotions of 2005. That year I stood on the podium alongside Alex Zanardi when he won his first WTCC race – there was not a dry eye at the track.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I just can’t wait for my home race. The 15 points I scored at Brands Hatch came at the perfect point in time. I’m far from giving up the fight for the title. Now I have to score as many points as possible in Oschersleben. I’m aware this will be no easy task with 70 kilos of handicap weight, but still I hope for a top result.”

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
”For me things can only get better. Following all the bad luck I have suffered so far this season, I finally want to make full use of our car’s fantastic performance by scoring some good results, and the fact I won one of last year’s Oschersleben rounds demonstrates that the circuit suits me well.”

Félix Porteiro (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
”I’m the only driver who has scored points in each of the past six races – twice I was on the podium. I wouldn’t mind continuing this way at Oschersleben. This consistency is the result of the hard work put in by me and my team.”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
”Quite obviously, my relationship with Oschersleben is a very special one. Being back on the highest step of the podium there in 2005, for the first time after my accident, will always remain unforgettable. But there’s no reason for me to only look back. Following my good recent results I now also want to score in Germany.”

Augusto Farfus claims sixth for BMW in Oschersleben qualifying session.

08-30-2008 Press Release
Oschersleben, 30th August 2008. Augusto Farfus (BR) set the sixth fastest lap time in qualifying for the 15th round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship. With a time of 1:36.004 minutes the BMW Team Germany driver has assured himself of being the highest placed BMW on the grid for the race in the “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben”. Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) went 0.329 seconds quicker than Farfus, taking pole for Sunday’s first race in the “Magdeburger Börde” region.

Triple world champion Andy Priaulx (GB) was ninth at the 3.696-kilometre circuit for BMW Team UK, while BMW Team Italy-Spain’s Félix Porteiro (ES) came 12th. Farfus’ team-mate, Jörg Müller (DE), had to make do with 13th. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) – also racing for BMW Team Italy-Spain – ended up 17th on the timesheets.

On several occasions the progress of the BMW drivers was hampered by yellow flags. Many minor incidents forced them to lift off the throttle on the narrow track. “This heavily influenced my qualifying on the negative side,” said Farfus after the 30-minute session. “My car was perfect, and I’m 100 percent sure we could have finished further up the grid. However, from the third row I have still got every chance to score a good result in front of our home crowd.”

“I’m really disappointed,” added Priaulx, “as my car was certainly capable of giving me the chance of a better grid position. But I cannot blame the team or myself. On my last lap I was blocked, and a little later another car went off in front of me. What can you do? That’s racing.”

Local hero Müller, who thanks to his win in Brands Hatch (GB) is carrying the maximum ballast of 70 kilograms, couldn’t exploit the full potential of his BMW 320si WTCC. He said: “On my last run I lost some time when overtaking another car. Otherwise I could have made it into the top eight. In the past, however, I have often managed to fight my way back from even further down the grid. So I will keep on fighting and give my very best on Sunday.”

Farfus and Porteiro score home wins for BMW in Oschersleben.

08-31-2008 Press Release

Oschersleben, 31st August 2008. Augusto Farfus (BR) and Félix Porteiro (ES) gave BMW a successful home event in the FIA World Touring Car Championship by scoring two wins at the “Motorsport Arena Oschersleben”. In the 15th round of the season, BMW Team Germany’s Farfus claimed victory from Chevrolet’s Robert Huff (GB) and Alain Menu (CH). In the second race of the day, Porteiro made the best use of pole position to celebrate his second WTCC win for BMW Team Italy-Spain. The 24-year-old was joined by SEAT’s Tom Coronel (NL) and Huff on the podium.

BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (GB) was pushed out of race one by SEAT driver Gabriele Tarquini (IT). But the reigning champion proved his fighting spirit and moved up from 26th to fifth in race two. BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) didn’t make it to the finish in the first round and was forced to leave Oschersleben empty-handed, after coming ninth in race two. Alessandro Zanardi (IT) finished 12th and 19th for BMW Team Italy-Spain. In the Drivers’ Championship, third placed Priaulx with 53 points remains the best-placed BMW driver. In the manufacturers’ classification, BMW gained some ground on SEAT but still lies second in the standings with 192 points.

Augusto Farfus (BMW Team Germany):
“We really needed this success. In qualifying we were not where we should have been. But the pace of my car was just so good that I was still able to score my second consecutive win in Oschersleben. My great start was the key – everything just went perfectly.”

Félix Porteiro (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“My second WTCC victory, 11 points in BMW’s home event and sixth in the championship: This was a perfect weekend for me. Tom Coronel gave me a hard time, but I successfully defended the lead. Many thanks to my team. We have managed to improve a lot over the course of the season.”

Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK):
“I never give up and this just shows what determination does for you. I felt it was inexcusable behaviour by a professional driver that led to my crash in race one. However, I then started race two very fired up.”

Jörg Müller (BMW Team Germany):
“I had worked out a different script for my home races. In race one I had a good start but got involved in a collision, which meant the left front suspension of my car was damaged. The start for the second race was great as well, but then Yvan Muller turned out to be a nut too hard to crack!”

Alessandro Zanardi (BMW Team Italy-Spain):
“I’m really happy for my team-mate Félix Porteiro. He worked hard and today earned his reward for all his efforts. I might have scored points in the second race, but after the accident at the start my car was very difficult to handle.”
