Last night Neil and I went up to do a bit more to the engine....

First was to finish off building the head up, get the rocker shafts and rockers back in....

then was to give the head and block a final clean up before putting the head back on the block...

Head gasket on....

Head on ready to torque down....

torqued down and at TDC ready for the timing belt....

rocker shaft retaining plate, in place...

Belt fitted and turns over nicely....

Once the valve clearances were reset and oil spray bar in place, it was time to put the nicely painted rocker cover on....

Then I couldn't resist mocking it up with the 6-branch and inlet....

One of Neil being daft...

Getting there

Nice

How did you get the tension on the cam belt right?  I've never managed to figure out how tight cam belts should be.  Haynes usually suggests somthing which to me sounds a bit vauge like "twist belt thru 90 deg using moderate finger pressure",  like what the chuff is moderate finger pressure?????

Well if you look at this photo.....

Look below the Cam pulley at the top, there is a spring and a pin that connects to the tensioner. This actually self tensions the belt, all you do is, move the tension to the left( slacken it off) fit the belt and slacken the new shiney bolt just bellow it and the tensioner will spring out (move to the right) and tension the belt. Then just tighten the shiney bolt and the one at the bottom. Job done.  I usually add a little extra tension by pushing the tensioner to the right before nipping it up, but not by too much.

Looking good

I'm like you - I just nip up the tensioner that little bit more and still find that I can twist the belt 90 degrees on the long section as required.

Just done the 323 with new tensioner, water pump and viscous for good measure. The 320 was done a year past January when I had to have a new head on it.

Cheers guys,

just noticed I haven't put up any photos of the completed engine, just the wiring loom to be attached now...

Also the gearbox has been cleaned up...

linkage dismantled, cleaned, re-greased and rebuilt...

I've got the input seal off at the mo, it's been replaced and is awaiting refittal...

the output seal also is to be replaced but it's a strange size bolt holding the flange for the prop on, something like a 28mm, so I'll have to speak to the guys next door  and get that done.

After that I need to fill the gearbox up with new oil, fit the flywheel and new clutch, replace the prop center bearing and it's ready to go into the 316!

vroom vroom!!

This is a great thread, lovin the techy, oily pic's, still know I couldn't try it as I'd be left with a lot of bit's that USED to be a car!!!......plus Like Andrew I'd be divorced, major kudos to ya mate, looking forward to the big reveal, the engine looks fantastic, lovin the metallic fleck effect on the rocker and inlet, nice choice!!!! she'll be a credit to you when she's done.
