engine cut out

   Hi all, 
I have a query regarding my so's car (chrysler voyager) 
I was sitting in traffic yesterday morning and the engine spluttered then stopped altogether. I tried it a couple of times to restart but the engine was just turning over. After a while the electrics were going a bit wonky ie rev/speedo went right over and then came back to normal with engine not running. 

The breakdown service guy said it may be the egr valve as you can hear the fuel pump running.
