recent problem have had vehicle for 6months erratic downshift coming to junctions and moving off intermitent fault returned to dealer for software rewrite did not cure fault then on jan 5th 2009 when pulling away from junction vehicle was accelerating without help from myself dealership has told me no more can be done and will not even book vehicle in for check any advice would be helpful vehicle is still under warranty

Welcome to the forum. Firstly, I don't think that this is an autobox fault. Secondly, sack that dealer and take it back to another one. It sounds like an engine management fault. The fact that the car took off means that the engine is doing something it shouldn't, the cause of this isn't the transmission. I am assuming that it is a new car to you and bought second hand from a BMW dealer, therefore you will have the benefit of BMW Assist. If this happens again, park the car, phone BMW Assist and get them to come out to you. Explain that you felt uncomfortable with this and are reluctant to continue your journey. They will diagnose the problem via their equipment and advise accordingly. They may want to take it to a dealer in which case you get them to go to another dealer than the one you have been too. What kinda engine is in your X5? Petrol or oil burner? Your autobox has adaptive shift patterns, this means that it learns how you drive and adjusts the shift patterns to suit your driving style. If you have been say crawling in traffic with the autobox only in first gear it will stay in first for a lot longer than normal. All my auto BMW's have had adaptive autoboxes and they do occasionally throw wee strange shift patterns in every so often. You have a potentially dangerous fault which needs proper attention. I once read that early X5 models had autobox problems (I expect that they would have been recalled FOC). I agree with the above though.

thanks for your input vehicle is going back in 26/01/2009 for further checks will keepyou updated wondered if wheel size might make difference standard wheels should be 235/65/17, 265/45/17 fitted when bought in june2008 going to ask if software needs to be detailed of wheelchange sizes I will not drive car until assurances are given and no further faults occur wilnot resume payments until satisfied with outcome

Messing around with tyre sizes can upset autoboxes. But again I don't think that this is a tranny fault. For example if you run non BMW specified tyre sizes i.e. different diameter tyres front and rear, it is not uncommon for autoboxes to go into emergency mode. This is caused by the computer getting confusing signals relating to wheel rotation speed. Wheel sensors at the front pick up speed signals and send these to the ECU which it turn the transmission uses to change gear. Changing the diameter of tyre changes the speeds of the wheels thus sending different signal values to the ECU. Keep us posted on what the outcomes are. Andrew |
