Moved to the 3 Series forum.
Has this problem just started or has it been ongoing since you switched engines?

Have you changed the ECU?
Do the various sensors suit the ECU?

I've not had a chance to get my M50 into in my 96 328i touring yet but have asked questions regarding the EWSii etc so I'm ready for it.

Here's the thread:

http://www.bmwowner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=150595

I'd suspect the EWSii although if you do a search on there you'll find a thread with a guy who had exactly the same problem....turned out to be a cam position sensor or something.

Yeah I was thinking It may be a sensor too, are all sensors, crank and cam plugged in properly and located properly??

I had a issue with starting my 325i. We finally traced it to corroded and damp contacts between the ecu and the loom plug.

Its under the plastic scuttle panel on the passenger side. Not sure if this will be the same problem as yours, but it is very damp outside so its possible.

Ours still struggles to start if left for afew weeks in our dampish garage.

I reckon that it would need to be diagnosed to find out for sure!
