BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. Key messages and show highlights

Wim Van Bogaert gives an overview of key messages and show highlights. Key highlights that are featured include the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW Z4 Roadster, BMW EfficientDynamics as well as BMW ConnectedDrive. The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo offers an impressive outlook on the extension of the BMW 5 Series by a new, additional concept. With its stylish appearance and comfortable driving experience, the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo transfers the characteristics of a classic Gran Turismo to a very special four-door vehicle with four seats. These features so typical of a Gran Turismo are then enriched by the highest standard of intelligent, versatile functionality. At Geneva BMW is celebrating the European premiere of the new BMW Z4 Roadster. The new Z4 offers greater elegance, it is sleeker and more stretched, and offers perfect harmony in its body lines. The retractable hardtop opens in barely 20 seconds. 1.35 million vehicles on the road with BMW EfficientDynamics clearly demonstrate how BMW Group is leading the competition in terms of CO2 reduction.BMW ConnectedDrive offers a unique portfolio of innovations in the three areas of motoring comfort, infotainment, and safety. The innovation at BMW ConnectedDrive in Geneva is BMW Routes. BMW Routes offers specially selected routes for the connoisseur – including restaurants, sites and hotel accommodation.

BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. The new BMW Z4 Roadster.

At the Geneva Motor Show BMW is presenting the new BMW Z4 Roadster in its European debut. Adrian van Hooydonk explains how the new Z4 offers greater elegance, it is sleeker and more stretched, and offers perfect harmony in its body lines. At the same time the design team re-interpreted classic roadster features such as the side gills in appropriate new style. What are the main innovations versus the former Z4? This is the first BMW Roadster with typical roadster proportions and a retractable hardtop. It offers even greater agility, far more passenger and luggage space with higher qualities and value, an optional new double-clutch gearbox, an adjustable suspension and BMW’s new iDrive. Adrian explains that "sDrive” means that the new Z4 offers supreme agility based on the combination of rear-wheel drive typical of BMW, well-balanced weight distribution, a long wheelbase with short body overhangs, and a low centre of gravity.

BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. BMW EfficientDynamics.

Back in Geneva 2008, BMW announced that in 2008 there would 700.000 vehicles on the road with BMW EfficientDynamics. Now one year later, the teller board stands at 1.35 million vehicles …and every month BMW is selling more cars with Efficient Dynamics than its competitors are in an entire year on their CO2 measures. Chris Koenders explains that BMW has seen the fastest decline in emissions: no other car manufacturer has reduced CO2 more in absolute numbers than BMW. With a reduction in fleet consumption by more than 25 per cent between 1996 and 2008, BMW has over-fulfilled the self-commitment made by the ACEA, the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers. BMW´s current fleet consumption is better than volume car manufacturers and on eye level of small car maufacturers. Chris Koenders mentions that today every BMW is equipped with Efficient Dynamics measures, ranging from the BMW 1 Series right to the BMW 7 Series. The BMW 116d which is presenting here in Geneva as a world premiere has an excellent 118g CO2/km, even lower than the Green Car of the Year which BMW was awarded in 2008 for the 118d. Another aspect of BMW EfficientDynamics is sustained value. Chris Koenders explains that with a higher residual value for ist cars with BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW has a further positive argument towards its customers. As proof for this argument Chris Koenders showcases a 2007 BMW 520d with BMW EfficientDynamics. This vehicle was first presented here in Geneva in 2007 and still has best-in-class emission figures of 136g CO2/km. And what does the future hold? Chris Koenders comments that one of the furture innovations will include space age technology for the road. With the thermoelectric generator BMW showcases an innovative technology to recover energy from the heat of exhaust gases and convert it into electricity. Coupled with BMW Brake Energy Regeneration, this creates a cycle of efficiency, as energy is constantly being recuperated during both overrun and acceleration phases. This means that BMW is again leading the way in reducing emissions with even more sheer driving pleasure…

BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo. Design.

Adrian van Hooydonk and Oliver Heilmer discuss design of the inspiring and elegant new concept from BMW. Over the last couple of months the press has speculated what BMW has in the cards for the Geneva Motor Show. "Progressive Activity Sedan" is a new vehicle category that is set to reshuffle the cards in the premium upper medium segment. Adrian van Hooydonk explains what "Progressive Activity Sedan" or PAS exactly stands for and how it defines a new category. With a semi-command seating position, perfect entry (no ‘climbing up’), headroom on BMW X5 level and legroom in the rear almost on the level of a BMW 7 Series long wheelbase, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo offers impressive dimensions and much more space for driver and passengers than you would expect when you see the car from the outside. From a design perspective, through its dynamic and elegant lines the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo lives out all the character of a modern sedan with a fastback rear of a traditional Gran Turismo. Oliver Heilmer talks about the sophisticated interior and generous space for the driver and passergers, making this Concept a truly progressive automobile for customers who attach the same importance to a relaxed feeling of space and variability as to elegance and driving pleasure. Showcasing the twin trunk lid, Oliver Heilmer explains this unique feature that offers maximum flexibility. When was the last time you experienced something for the first time… surely fits this inspiring and elegant new concept from BMW.

Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Ladies and Gentlemen—

Bonjour and welcome to the BMW stand! BMW has created history in Geneva. Exactly two years ago, we presented Efficient Dynamics here for the first time. And back then, I promised you that we would combine a maximum of “sheer driving pleasure” with a minimum of fuel consumption.

And that’s exactly why we can already offer our customers Premium Selection used cars with these advanced fuel-saving technologies.

Today I can say:

First: The BMW Group builds the most efficient premium cars worldwide. On average, our customers save one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers compared to our competitors.

Second: The BMW Group has reduced its fleet’s carbon emissions more than any other manufacturer. Our EU fleet consumption decreased by over 25 percent between 1995 and 2008. We walked the talk and fulfilled the ACEA voluntary commitment. And now we are making our contribution to meeting the EU’s emission performance targets for 2012 and 2015.

Third: The BMW Group’s EU fleet emits an average of 156 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This is significantly below the fleet emissions of other premium manufacturers.

Fourth: Each new BMW and MINI model will be equipped with EfficientDynamics. We will keep adding new chapters to the story.

What you see right now is not simply a shower of license plates. These plates represent our achievements. Each one stands for a BMW or MINI model that either complies with the EU5 emission requirements, or already meets the EU6 standard, or emits a maximum of 140 grams of CO2.

In other words: Practically our entire model portfolio already falls into one of these categories.

For example, with the BMW 1 Series, customers can choose between 19 models that are EU5 compliant. Among them is the “World Green Car of the Year”—the BMW 118d. And today, we are presenting an even “greener” BMW. Premium means sustainable. This is the BMW brand’s new entry-level diesel model—the 116d!

At present, the BMW 116d is the car with the lowest fuel consumption and the lowest emissions in the BMW portfolio. It has an average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.4 liters and 118 grams of CO2. This model was launched a few days ago.

Apart from efficiency, design remains a critical factor in buying decisions. Our customers expect us to be excellent in both areas. I am delighted to present to you the European premiere of the new BMW Z4.

BMW is renowned for being a trendsetter in Design. The new Z4 is a perfect example of this.

And I promise you: in the coming years we will present even more new exciting designs for you.

The new Z4 is the first BMW roadster with a two-piece retractable hardtop. With the push of a button, the top opens or closes in only 20 seconds. Spring is on its way—and along with it the convertible season. My recommendation would be: Let BMW ConnectedDrive find the appropriate route for your convertible tour.

Just like our strategy of Efficient Dynamics, cars such as the new Z4 and the BMW 116d show: We at BMW are consistently redefining mobility for our customers. My colleague Klaus Draeger will now present our latest innovative BMW vehicle concept. This is the world premiere of the BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo!

Dr. Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development

Ladies and Gentlemen—

BMW has frequently founded new segments and successfully positioned itself in niche markets. We always put the customers and their demands first. This is why we want to show our customers again and again that we can offer them even better and more sophisticated solutions.

With the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, BMW is once again creating a completely new segment in the automotive market. Today we are celebrating the world debut of a concept car which is the near-series implementation of the Progressive Activity Sedan.

This new vehicle concept will complement the existing BMW 5 Series model line. It combines the characteristics of a prestigious sedan, the functionality and space of an SAV and elements of a traditional Gran Turismo.

This extremely versatile vehicle is the only one of its kind on the market right now. This is premium at its most innovative.

So what are the highlights?

Let’s take a look at the interior first: This car is not only luxurious, but also highly versatile. It offers absolutely comfortable seating and a slightly elevated seating position. The rear seats can be rearranged as you please. Passengers in the back enjoy the legroom of a BMW 7 Series and the headroom of a large SAV. With the series vehicle, we will offer individual rear seats or a rear seat bench for three people. Just like a sedan, the Gran Turismo’s trunk is separate and has a two-piece trunk lid. When you fold down the rear seats, its volume expands to 1,650 liters.

When you look at the exterior, two things are most striking: its coupe-like silhouette with the four frameless door-windows and the large panorama roof.

Briefly, I would like to mention three crucial elements: the spatial comfort with a slightly elevated seating position, the surprising functionality and the outstanding design. One thing is for sure: The 5 Series Gran Turismo is a true BMW. Of course the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is equipped with our EfficientDynamics measures.

Which target group do we wish to attract with this vehicle? In a nutshell: People who appreciate great travel comfort. People who look for a modern car that adapts to their everyday needs and not vice versa.

This is a near-series concept car. The series model with a choice of four or five seats will be available in Europe in November.

We consider innovations the key to a successful future. This applies to both our innovative vehicle concepts, such as the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, as well as our new drive concepts developed in the framework of Efficient Dynamics.

This includes the electric drive train. We also offer convincing solutions in this field—as Dr. Reithofer and Ian Robertson are about to demonstrate.

Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Driving pleasure without emissions—this is not a vision any more. Here is the first MINI with a fully electric drive train! 500 customers in L.A. and New York will be testing the MINI E in everyday urban life. And soon the MINI E will also appear on the roads of big cities in Europe.

So the BMW Group has the largest electric car fleet right now!

And we also have a competitive advantage in terms of technology—concerning the lithium-ion battery, the reach and the performance of the 204-horsepower MINI E.

Ian, how far can the MINI E go before it needs a pit stop?

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing

Up to 250 kilometers. This means, you could travel from this place to Basel, Lucerne or to Turin or go for a trip around Lake Geneva.

Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Ok Ian, then nothing can keep you from driving over to the MINI stand next door. This is where the MINI press conference is about to start. Have fun at MINI and thank you very much for your attention.

BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. BMW ConnectedDrive.

Chris Koenders explains the unique portfolio of innovations that are covered by BMW ConnectedDrive. The BMW ConnectedDrive innovations connect driver, car and outside world and focus on safety, convenience and infotainment. Chris Koenders explains a main safety feature of BMW ConnectedDrive: the Advanced eCall. Imagine you’re in an accident. The Advanced eCall ensures that the rescue forces have full details on the place and type of collision as well as possible injuries before they dispatch help to the scene of the accident. Therefore those rescue forces are able to prepare appropriate medical treatment of the victims in the shortest possible time. New tools to improve the convenience of driving include BMW Head-Up Display with speed limit info as well as BMW Night Vision with person recognition. What’s the maximum permissible speed? Is it applicable only when wet? The Speed Limit Display answers such questions. The resulting permissible speed is displayed in both the instrument cluster and optional Head-Up Display. What a great feeling to know you are never over the limit. BMW Night Vision with person recognition truly outshines any light. It’s the first system able to identify both people and the possible collision threat they might pose. BMW Night Vision alerts you by displaying a warning symbol on the instrument cluster as well as in the optional Head-Up Display. That way, you can react in time: Forewarned is forearmed. As already presented in Paris, BMW ConnectedDrive has brought the Internet into the car. BMW is the world’s first car manufacturer who provides the World Wide Web in the vehicle. The latest innovation in the field of infotainment include BMW Routes, launched here at the Geneva Motor Show. BMW Routes currently offers specially selected routes for the connoisseur – including restaurants, sites and hotel accommodation. Chris Koenders demonstrate how he downloads a scenic Tour de Suisse including a visit to the renowned Paul Klee Museum in Bern. He then plugs the USB stick with the scenic route into the BMW Z4 Roadster, gets the route on the navigation system and is ready to go.

BMW at the Geneva Motor Show 2009. BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo. Concept and Target Groups.

Chris Koenders discusses the idea of PAS and the target groups this innovative concept was designed for. "Progressive Activity Sedan" is a new vehicle category that is set to reshuffle the cards in the premium upper medium segment. Chris Koenders explains what "Progressive Activity Sedan" or PAS exactly stands for and how it defines a new category. Progressive stands for: creative, innovative, taking a step into the future of individual mobility, in terms of concept as well as customer orientation. Activity addresses the product highlight of variability and extends “sedan” associations with untypical, yet desired and emotional virtues. Sedan creates worldwide positive associations of status, prestige and formal elegance. And who is this innovative concept intended for? Chris Koenders refers to the animated scribble video that explains the creative process that defined this latest concept from BMW. A growing number of customers is no longer willing to make compromises with their cars. ... and therefore they are open to change into “new concepts”. They are bored by sedans without functionality. They find SUVs no longer responsible. They dislike the utilitarian character of estates. They find coupes emotionally appealing, but mind the lack of space. Those customers are open for thinking and acting beyond tradition. They have been looking for a car fulfilling this attitude. Those are the customers who we will address with the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.
