97 BMW 323i, non-nikasil.

I reckon it might be a fueling issue. When in a closed loop, idle, or a fixed speed/revs the car tends to rock slightly as if its overfueled and starved repeatedly.

Happens when cold and warm.

Any ideas?

Try changing the Lambda probe.

Could also be a fault with the Mass Air Flow meter or MAF.  Diagnostics may pick up a fault.

I've just had this kind of issue on my E34 5 series estate.

I found the cause of mine by accident, when I leant on the air filter and the engine stalled.

In my case it was a split in the rubber that connected the air filter box to the inlet manifold, when you accelerated the engine, the engine moved, opening the split, the engine would stall, close the split, and do it all over again very quickly until the engine stabilised, giving me a judder, and making me look like an "L" driver with kangeroo juice !

Its plagued me for weeks, might be worth a check.

Best Wishes

Nigel
