I could perhaps get one, I'm not sure I've ever seen one used, aren't they used for telling you if there is a misfire?

Well to be honest Nigel, I'm not sure at all but the fact it brings up a crank sensor fault leads me to believe it's connected with that. One would assume that as no other electrical or mechanical components (except the flywheel) interfere with the sensor then surely if it's not the sensor then it's the wiring or ECU?

Having said that, I also have a misfire and when starting the car after it sitting for a couple of days or so, I get a small plume of blue smoke when starting up. I have heard that the oil breather at the back of the engine can leak and this can cause rough running but when I floor the throttle, on a good day, I get a smooth rev right up to the red line but when idling, you can definatley feel a misfire and as mentioned quite often, she struggles to reach past 4000rpm.

At the moment I'm just eliminating the simple stuff. I've done the plugs and plug connectors which attach to the coils. I have no idea where to even start looking for air leaks and vacuum pipes but if anyone has any pictures of vacuum pipe layouts on the M60 engine, I'd be grateful for a peek!

For now, I'm going to replace the pin connectors and wires from the ECU plug to the crank sensor. I spoke to the technical specialist I work with and he said if he had the same symptoms as I have, he'd do the same as me just to eliminate this possibility.

Anymore tips, feel free

Mike

I had the ecu out of my 525i many times whilst playing with chips etc, it resets itself (revs up and down a bit whilst checking its settings) for the first ten secs or so, but otherwise I never had any issues.

Are you sure your problem is electrical and not an air leak ?

Best Wishes

Nigel

Well I think my theroy is good, now all I have to do is get my technical guy at work to decipher the diagram as I'm sure it's just 2 wires but I'll get him to confirm which 2 pins I need to replace then run the new wires from there.

Fingers crossed!

Another question, if I disconnect my ECU is there anything special I should do (I will disconnect the battery first!)

Thanks

Mike

Yes, the on going saga of my car not revving beyond 4000rpm in still, well... on going!

As I have mentioned in a previous post, the car will rev to about 4k then cuts power and the engine management light flicks on for a second. This can be embarressing when acceleration away from the lights or overtaking as you can imagine!

I had a fault code reader on it ages ago and it pointed to the crank sensor which I subsequently had replaced only to find the problem seemed to have gone but only to re-occur a few days later. I have been looking into the possibility of testing the fuel pressure in case the fuel pump is weak and theefore not supplying enough fuel but it would still not explain the crank sensor fault. The funny thing is, I have also had the plug replaced which is along the bulkhead at the back of the engine which connects the loom from the ECU to the sensor as I thought some of the pins were loose on the plug. This again seemed to eliminate the problem for a bit only for it to come back again.

My theory is that I have a wiring fault as the problem disappears when the wires are fiddled with. The other day, I managed to get to the red line twice while driving but the next time, it cut out at just under 4000 rpm so the fault is intermittent.

I was hoping to be able to identify the pins on the plug for the ECU and trace the wires back to the sensor so I can replace it all to see if this cures the fault. Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram which will enable me to do this?

Cheers

Mike
