Welcome to the forum!
What's up with it? See the other post on here - the commonest fault is actually not a fault, but just a result of taking the battery out, and fixed by holding the switch up for 30sec. Edited by jetsetwilly2000 |

The common fault on E34 touring roofs is actually the motor(s)...Not that it packs up completely, but that it looses count of the turns it makes and therefore also the postion of the roof..
The motors (there are two) have a drive peg that clicks a switch with every revolution...If this peg is broken or moves or the switch is broken or moved, then the count is incorrect and the roof fails to (usually) close, although it can also fail to open or tilt...Also the switch appears to loose control and (for instance) pressing back actually causes it to move forward... The other thing that is a common issue is that the operation becomes slow..This is due to dirt or dried grease on the tracks... The front motor is the more usual one to fail first and it is easy to remove...3 bolts (torx head) screw it to the track and it just pops off...It can be serviced with grease, etc... You can grease the tracks a little at the same time, but to remove the tracks to do the clean/regrease in full requires removing both roofs and the headling to access the rear motor..Many hours of labour!! |

It is the rear of the front section that is supposed to lift (tilt) on the first back push of the switch...
To get it to open from there, push the switch back again and it should open then press up to stop if you don't want it all the way open....You can also push and hold for the required length of time. If you want the rear to open, then after the front roof has tilted up, push the switch forward and the rear roof opens...Once open all the way (it can also be just part opened), you can then push the switch back and the two roof sections move together to alter where the opening is...
