i Have just come back from the Wembley classic car show and there was a stand there selling uprated plug leads that don't loose voltage along there length and have 5 elements inside rather than the usual one resulting in a longer brighter spark and thus better burn in the cylinder. They claim that the result will be much better fuel consumption, less wear on spark plugs, more torque and more power. They have been developed for racing and are used on Mazarati's and Bentley. I was wondering if anyone has any views on this and can suggest whether this would be a wise or poor investment for my old 635csi. Oh one aother thing, they come with a  60,000 mile warranty.

If your originals are in good condition, you won't really notice the difference other than in your wallet. I bought some Magnecor leads for my Rover coupe turbo and noticed no difference!!

I also tried Splitfire plugs which are suppossed to give you upto 5bhp extra!! But these were absolute crap, my car sounded like a rally car popping and banging - good job I had a de-cat silencer!!

A good quality lead is just as good!

The only time you may notice a difference is on a quite heavily modded car with an uprated ignition system where more power is put thru the leads etc or a turbo car as these have a higher voltage - but I didn't notice on mine.

Manufacturers put a lot of time and money into ignition systems, so long as the leads on your car aren't tracking (shorting out due to duff insulation) then you'll get exactly the same power output. A sparks a spark. So long as it arrives at the right time, a few volts here or there mean nothing, so no power can be gained by ht leads . Unless the ones you're replacing are shot anyway...

Cheers for the replies guys. Had a chat with Munich Legends yesterday and they said that it would be a complete waste of money. The DTM e30 Touring cars had bog standard Bosch leads and they were running big horse power and they cost £250,000 new from BMW. Enough said.

anybody seen this before... theyre well wicked

i have the dvd and its mint.

on the "in the making of" bit on the dvd they talk about how all the bmws used in film never need to be modified because the engine is ideally suited to the chassis etc... where as you have other make cars that have to have special engine transplants and suspension tweaks to make them drive better in the film.. sohlman i want an e28 520 as my next car. worth it? will it be crap comapred to my e30 318

Seen some of those vids and they are good. On the E28, I have only driven an M5 and that was very very quick, but my six is pretty similar as it shares the same chassi. They are brill cars and will basically drive like a slightly bigger e30. I would recomend going with a 528, 535, or M535 rather than a 520, not that the 520 is bad, but because the other give you some real performance, and are generally a higher spec. The best one to get is an M535i preferable with the dog leg box. They have to be treates with respect mind you as they are a tad arsey and they don't have very big side windows . They do suffer from tin worm, but not as bad as the old sixes. You should buy on condition rather than mileage as the mechanicals are very stong. Hope this helps.

i gotta agree with sohlman there !

 ive got 2 e30s and an m535i and the 5 just feels like a big 3 , if u go for a m535 u wont find em toooo bad on fuel compared to the 520 !

 and the m535 is well known for being one of if not the best handling and well balanced car of its size ! not to mention the limited slip diff making them one of the most entertaining  cars to drive either on the road or the track ! i still got mine for sale if u wanna have a look and test drive of one b4 u make ur mind up !!!

ok cool..... i was thinking of 520 because of fuel and insurance costs (my 318 is costing 1550 this year and when i get it renewed it'll cost me 900.. i heard that the 525e has good economy, (hence the e i think) but again i dont feel like i know ahything

Insurance companies tend to regard the 5 series as more "grown up" than the 3. On a quote I had a 328 was going to be £125 more than a 528.

The 525e you mention was an economy special version & was more economical than a 520.

my 535 only cost 600 quid to insure fully comp when i bought her ! i think its a group 16 or 18 i cant remember but i do know my 325 was`more expensive to insure ? i guess its cos there are more 3s owned by boy racers ( im one of em)

 getting back to the leads issue , i know they make big difference my cossie  but thats cos its got a grp a coil delivering more power to the plugs ! i think if you were to use an uprated coil then the leads would be neccassary , and you would feel  the difference !! not sure what coil u could use tho ????

i know what you mean ! trouble is insurance just keeps rising and theres nothing we can do to stop it . i think the 535 will be a fair bit more to insure than ur 318 , i dont no about a 520 or a 525 cos theyve never been my cuppa tea !!

  console yourself with this thought tho ! im 28 and my cossie is now costing me nearly £900 ! its painfull at my age

haha! i wanted a cossie when i was seven, it was my "favourite car" lol ive always had 'nuff respect for fords (well before colin chapman left anyway) - it was colin chapman who had a lot to do with ford and cossie yeah? anyway you can't beat a good old Mk1 RS500 cossie 2door......
