Can anyone tell me if the LPG gas converstions are worth the initial investment. I have found a place in wales which is LPG registered which can do the converstion in 1 day as long as the job is pre arranged and costs 1300 quid for the multi injection thing with a 2 year guarantee. I do about 20,000 miles plus a year and the 528 touring is a bit thirsty but a beautiful drive. I dont wanna sell the thing to get something newer and more economical (peugeot diesel) which will loose more money when i come to sell it, and wont be as nice to drive. The BM does not owe me any money but its a lot of cash to put down. Any insight or recommendations cheers imran |

hello m8, I drive e39 523i and have 50L tank installed. I
manage over 220 miles on motorway and about 160 miles local, 30-40 mph. If you are planning to keep the car then go for it ! Edited by Babis |

The initial outlay is the worst bit but the overall benefits do come in to play after approx a year. I would have thought the 528 would be good on the fuel cause i have had a E34 540 v8 and now have a E39 535 v8 and both are good on the fuel the 535 is slightly better than the 540. 25.4mpg for the 535 24.3mpg for the 540. both cars are run on shell v power which give beter fuel millage at a slighty higher cost but worth it. But i would not discorouage you to put in LPG tank. Ian |

An LPG conversion makes sense on bigger engined older cars, provided you do the mileage to make it worth while. The guy I know who has a LPG conversion on his V8 Landie gets just over half the mpg but as the gas is half the price, he is quids in, just. The figures you quite sound sensible so if I were you I would go for it. The biggest downfall I would say on LPG conversions is actually finding somewhere that sells the chuffin' gas in the first place. The Shell, BP and Esso garages I use don't sell the stuff. I think only certain supermarkets stock it where I stay, near Glasgow Airport. Andrew |

I had mine done a few years ago on my 523
and had problems. It did work but the kick in of the gas injection sometimes came with a dramatic thump! on the motorway at steady speeds it was great though. Fuel economy was good but not
as good as they said it would be. I had it removed after going to a
second installer who tried to tune it better, which hardly made a difference - perhaps I had bad luck though with the initial installer!

I know of a guy who had LPG on a V8 Landrover Discovery and he got some good return on it. He worked it out to be about 15p a mile better than unleaded so I guess you have to weigh up whether the mileage will give you the return?
