Hi, I'm not currently a BMW owner. I took a 735i for a test drive 2 days ago. New shape, 2002 model. 3.6L V8 Auotomatic. I fell in love with BMW right there and then.

As I've never owned a BMW, I've always heard they are expensive to maintain. This one is selling just under 12 000.

What would it be like on fuel, km per litre? roughly

Also, what would the biggest and main probelems be with them? And if anyone have a rough guide as to what it might cost (eg: gearbox fix, under 1000 etc...) to fix the problems. I know prices vary, but just a rough idea.

I haven't stopped thinking about the car... a first in my life!

I really really want to buy the car!!!

Thank You

..so buy it!

welcome to the forum

I think you are only going to justify it to yourself more and more to buy the car. I've not driven the newer shape seven series (drove an E38 once and really like it). The shape isn't as bad as the 'Bungled' ones in fact it's very nice.

The way I look at it, is it's a 7 series, not frugal but in all honesty I expect the engines to be pretty good fuel wise with all the eco developments of a luxury car over the years.

Oh, and I'm not biased - I've just ended my several years of BMW ownership by buying a Volvo estate (family and all that)

Yeah I agree, my finances aren't too great at the moment. We're planning a trip to Egypt early next year, want to start having children and still paying of the Land Rover (almost done!)

I just really want to knowif the car is going to be THAT MUCH MORE expensive to run than a Freelander TD4 (2L Turbo Diesel).

Obviously it's gonna be more... but how much?

I don't know BMW very well. I know the car as 735i... what's with E38 etc...?

Hi and welcome to the forum

All BMWs are reffered to by their E numbers which is a description of the chassis.

Current 5 series saloon is the E60, current 5 series touring (estate) is the E61.   Current 3 er is E90, prev 3 er is the E46, one before that again is the E36.

Full list of E numbers and engine numbers can be found here

http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=3663& ;PN=1

The 7 er you are looking at is the first of the E65 chassis after they were "Bangled".  It has a lovely smooth V8 (is that just a bored out version of the 3500 cc V8?)  I haven't heard of anything major going wrong with the V8s of that era, keep an eye on coolant levels and if the V8 starts rough running it will probably be an oil seperator valve or one of the engine exhaust gas/emissions/crank case breather valves but they don't cost the earth to replace.

Regarding the transmission, it will be an electronically controlled steptronic 'box made by ZF for BMW.  It is deemed to be sealed for life so doesn't have a dipstick (so you can't check the levels) but it ideally should be serviced every 50,000 miles or so.  They are generally sound and reliable.  Worth getting it serviced to keep it in top form.

It will be thirsty, the newer V8s are more comparable to the older 6pots.  Parkers (cough) says she'll do 25 mpg but they say mine will do 25 mpg but I get about 28-29 mpg on average.  I'll get 35 mpg on M'way runs and 21 mpg when towing....  So I would think this one would be much the same, smaller engine but bigger car...

At least this 7er will have a smooth silky sounding engine and not a lumy, unrefined, smelly, noisey 4 pot disesel engine like the one afflicting your Landrover.

It will also probably have ISOfix kiddie seat fixing points in the rear which is something to bear in mind if you are planning to have sprogs.

Let us know how you get on.

Andrew

The E38 is a 7 series from the 90's with 3 popular models - 728 6 pot and the 730,735, and 740 V8's with the dreaded Nikasil on the earlier ones. There's also the 750 V12 (if you have shares in Exxon).

No idea what the specs are for the cars you have/are looking at but I'd suggest spending your money now before children come along as things tend to change slightly when they do arrive lol

Just as a comparison, I've just sold my old E36 318ti auto compact which is a 16V 1.8 litre giving 140 bhp (ish), and bought a Volvo T5 CD auto which is a 2.3 litre turbocharged estate giving 225 bhp (easily tunable to 270 bhp via a remap) and this gives about the same economy as the BMW of about 30 mpg.

Trouble with 4x4 cars is the engine is having to power the four wheel drive system and usully the extra weight ascociated with them so the economy drops. I wouldn't be surprised if the economy of the freelander and the 735i aren't that different.

all i can say is buy it , i currentley own a e36 323 2.5 and a e46 2.0 and when i drove the newer 735i the fuel consumption was about the same as my 323 . it was silky smooth, quiet but the performance was a bit crap off the mark but once above 2.5-3k it sure did shift , i am currentley on the look out for a e39 540i but i only do about 5-6k a year .personally i think the newer 5 series is a nicer looking car than the 7 but prices are very attractive on the 7 , seen them as low as 8000 - bargain - what can you buy for the same money that will equal the spec and quality of the beemer - get it bought !!!
