Hi to all members of this forum,
recently made a decision to become a member of bmw owners community, but need to make a choice between e39 (last years) and E60. I live in Dublin, have 2 kids, so safety is a major issue. Which one to choose, is it worth spending extra 3-5k on E60 2-3 years younger? Thanks |

I've just replaced my first e39, a '97 523i, after 7 years and 100k of the most satisfactory miles I've ever had in a car. I kept it about 2.5 times longer than I've ever kept another car, 5 other BMW's of mine came and went in that time, 8 if you include Mrs D's, and an Audi A4. The replacement? A '00 523i. To be honest, I would have preferred a 530i Sport but manuals are thin on the ground and I can be a bit picky, hence the compromise of a '00 with 41k, full BMW history and right out of the box condition, but one I'm happy to live with for a couple of years. E60's are at a price point where it was an option but not one I considered for long. The e39 was top of its class pretty much all of its life. The e60 didn't move the game on a great deal but introduced the controversial Bangle styling. To my mind though, the big reason I didn't consider one is cockpit ergonomics. Too much plastic that looks cheap and an i-drive system that set out to answer a question that no one needed to ask in an e39 with its ergonomic excellence. You mentioned safety. Both cars are 4 star NCAP and even a '97 5 has 4 airbags. 98 and later have 6. The e60, and I think late e39, had rear side bags as an option but there doesn't seem to be a great deal of advance in the e60. So, my vote goes to the e39. I await the offended e60 owners defending the cheap plastic comments particularly Edited by Dergside |

With the launch of a new 5 series IMO you will probably see a slightly more than normal drop on E60 prices and as company car users etc trade-up there could be more available with different or higher specs.
Having had the 3 E39s I'd say that with the facelift options on lights etc they still look fresh....much the same as any BM in that buy a good 1 and it'll be great...buy a bad 'un and it'll nite you in the wallet. IMO colour and wheel size matter much much more than the E39 in the E60 carrying it off or looking a bit awkward.....now 545 in black with 18" or 19" alloys will do me nicely |

The E39 is a better looking car and has a remote boot release in the cabin. The E60 doesn't have a boot release. It has a blanked off part of trim where it was in the E39. I actually miss that quite a bit. I was after a late E39 530i Sport, couldn't find any but came across the V8 E60, which on paper has the same fuel economy as the older 6 pot in the E39. It was a no brainer and went for the V8. So with the though of owning and running a V8, anything else pailed into insignificance........ The E60 has far fewer electrical gremlins than the E39 had. The bigger engined E60s have more toys as standard. Don't buy a diesel E39, if you must infflict a diesel upon your family then for piece of mind get the E60 (except the 520d as it is just terrible to drive and live with) as by that time BMW had fixed the turbo problems. The iDrive is fine. You will be actually suprised how little you use it once you are off and running. I only use it to change between CD/Radio and to alter the mix of air temp from the centre vents. The radio controls that you need are all steering wheel mounted. Yes I would expect to see the E60 prices drop with the new F10 but when the E60 was launched, E39 prices rose as folk didn't like the new one. Either way, I would say you won't be dissappointed. I think it will come down to ££££s or them Euro thingies you use. Andrew |
