Cam Shaft Sensor Faulty 523i E39

I have just had my car serviced and this fault message was displayed. Can you you tell me what this fault would do to the cars performance, and is it urgent to have it replaced. I have noticed that the car is sluggish when pulling away, could it be linked as no other fault showed up when having the inspection 2 service.

Hi there & welcome to the forum, yes that problem will be one of a few that can arise from a faulty sensor, I think it's a fairly easy DIY job to change out, someone else with more experience will hopefully back this up.

We've recently replaced both camshaft sensors on our 328i.  The first was replaced because the car was very sluggish up to around 2600-2700rpm and flew like poo off a shovel beyond that.  This was the inlet side sensor iirc.  Not too much later the opposite problem occurred, it had plenty of go up to about the same rev level and then seemed to get very breathless beyond.  Cue, the second replacement and all horses are now fully restored to rude health.  In both cases, the problem made my old single vanos 523i seem like a greyhound out of the traps in comparison.
