Ive got a Nokia N97 but the same goes for all these appy phones.

Mine crashed a couple of weeks ago and I had to reset it to the factory settings this was going to happen if I did it myself or sent it back.

Id backed it up [and previously restored it successfully] I had also copied the contents of the mass drive, where I kept them all, to my PC.  Ill bet not many folk have done that!

Once it was all back working again a number of apps I had downloaded had gone.  No surprise it was the ones I liked rather than the rubbish ones!

Now I hadnt ever paid for apps but a few of the apps I had are now pay for.  [Ive since found one that is on OVI (Nokia website) and Midomi is 4 for on one page, and 8 on another , for free on another site .]

Ive seen apps at prices over 30/40 I be raging if Id had a few of them before my phone went t*ts up.  AND before any of youz smarmy iPhone users think of having a laugh Ive heard the same thing has happened to a few of them!

You have been warned.

I think I backed my Blackberry up, can't be sure (might do that later).
I've signed up to a website that gives out free apps for Blackberrys and get email alerts all the time (though not all are for my model). Best ones I've had are for a torch (using the video light) and a few games. Being wifi I can hook up to my wifi router at home to check emails etc. instead of waiting for my computer to warm up.

It's a shame Blackberry and Nokia don't have the same
system as iTunes. Once you downloaded it to iTunes it stays
there. So can reload as many times as you like.

Hi K. The honest answer is I dont know.  It seems to but since the OP I've become even more confused

With my N97 I have 2 Nokia ways of backing up the phone on my PC, I also copied the contents of the mass drive (an extra 32 GB hard drive), where I keep the downloads and apps to my PC.  I copied the mass drive for reasons other than being an obsessive it was easier muck about with my music.

You'd have thought Id have all bases covered!  I did.  I didnt.  I might have.

Anyway after the hard reset I plugged it in to do a system restore and almost everything came back to as it was as you would expect.

But there were these apps missing, I think now maybe about dozen.  You only notice they're not there when you're looking for them!!!

Now interestingly (maybe not that interesting) of the 6 or so that Ive been able to reload (for free  ) all but one has asked if I want to overwrite the existing programme.

I swear to God Ive searched using the phone to search itself; Ive plugged the damn thing into my PC and searched through that; Ive browsed the phone through the phone and the PC and there were no files related to these programmes visible (I have hidden files visible as standard) in any folder, including system folders that related to the apps I lost.

OK so it DID become a bit of an obsession to find these apps on my phone, particularly after the first reload said it was already there.  But where are ye ya wee feckers?

Despite this its still way, way the best phone I have ever had!

PS Im still a decent free Backgammon down the one I had is now paid for.

The reinstallation presumably saw the original files there
(which are not visible via the normal PC software).
However, it sounds like your phones operating system was
missing key files for the apps and ignored them (from a
menu perspective)
