Hi

Sorry to have to call on your services so soon but my car wouldn't start this morning, well at least it started but keeps stopping. There are air bubbles in the clear fuel line from the filter, I suspected the filter as it doesn't appear to have been changed for a long time. It may be a silly question but does it have a fuel pump? None of my other diesels have but I did hear a brief whirring noise from the back, no fuel is being delivered with the filter off.

Thanks in anticipation

Peter

Hmm, probably the fuel pump but the filter is a cheaper place to start!  There may be a second pump for diesels but the main pump is in the tank under an inspection hatch in the floor of the boot. It's a fairly easy DIY job or cheap garage job, but the pumps are about £200 unfortunately.

You can test the pressure from the pump with a cheap £30 pressure gauge off ebay, or just put it in to get tested.  The pressure usually goes before the pump fails entirely.

Best to get the word from a diesel person tho - my experience is with petrol E34s

Thanks for the reply, I have found the fuel pump and and its not pumping, there doesn't appear to be any voltage on it. I see there are some electronics in the top of the filter, is this a pressure regulator? I need a circuit diagram, I have ordered one of these manuals on CD, don't know if it has the info I want, will have to wait and see. I have a Haynes book but that doesn't cover the diesel and has no circuit for the fuel pump anyway.

Should I need a fuel pump there is a new one on ebay for £29.99! but I don't think at the moment that is the problem.

Could be the relay.  They are notorious for being placed in unpredictable places on the petrols so you might have to hunt about.

OK thanks. I have just ascertained that the pump is actually faulty, I connected 12v directly to it - not a sound, so I have ordered one, whether there is a supply fault or its my ignorance of when it should be there, remains to be seen.

The beast lives!

It was the pump, ordered one from ebay yesterday, £29.99 + post, it arrived this morning and I fitted it this afternoon and all is well. I hope it goes more than another 6 days without breaking down.

Good stuff!  And 29.99 is a fair bit cheaper than the £200 I paid for my bosch one when it went
