I am looking to replace my E39 with another E39 but would like to keep my current steering wheel.

Never fiddled with an airbag steering wheel, is there anything to watch out for?
disconnect battery?

Disconnect battery, wait at least 15 mins to avoid stray capacitance, and then take it off with one eye shut and your face turned away in fear (that's what I do anyway).

While off store it like you would a compressed spring.  I put mine under the car, or else in a metal cupboard.

Just out of interest, but how would you drive a car with no steering wheel?

yes yes, well spotted.  You know what i mean!  I stuck my wheel on with no airbag to move the car and bing - had to get the light reset.

Saw my cousin driving a car into his yard once with vice grips...
