have replaced thermostat and rebled rad when i topped it back up with a50/50 mix and still it wants to overheat as soon as you drop speed or stop it goes right back to half and it wont overheat if you leave it idling its got me puzzled and most garages ive been to aswell can anyone help ?

Check the water pump.

I had almost exactly the same problem with my E36 325i, fine round town, onto the motorway, gauge disappeared into the red, stop, open bonnet, not that hot in there really, no steam, top up with water, fine for a while at speed, always ok round town.

ShepsM3 fixed mine

Cats know your every thought.

But don't care.
