Looking for advice, have seen a 2007 July registered E60 525D bmw for sale in UK (For auction actually) problem is its advertised as a 525d 3.0 does this mean its taxed as a 3ltr or 2.5ltr. or is it basically a 3.0 ltr with a 2.5 badge.

The e60 (and equivalent e90/91/92, etc) 525d switched from a 2.5 to a detuned 3.0d engine in early 2007.  These will be road taxed based on CC as a 3.0 for 2007 cars.  For 2008 and later they work out quite well as CO2 based road tax is €447pa.

The badging on BMW's these days doesn't really give a great indication of engine size like it used to.  A 118d, 120d and 123d all have a 2.0 engine.  Similarly, a 2008 325i, 330i and 335i all have a 3.0 petrol engine.

Yes.

Emissions for an e39 530d (manual) is 189g/km so it falls in to the 28% VRT rate category.  A 2007 3.0d 525d man is 165g/km and falls in to the 24% VRT category.
