Hey Guys, bit of a strange one - only when the engine is initially put under load,
a squeal can be heard. Happens when taking off in first or in reverse.
Tested by leaving handbrake on and slow releasing the clutch - as soon
as the clutch begins to bite - squealing noise - once the car has got
going, no noise.
Any ideas - thought it might be belts - but surely if a tensioner was going, the belt would squeal all the time ? |

Spray WD-40 on the belts to rule-out belts squeaking.Won't cost more then few quids to try this.

Thought it was a bad idea to put any solvent based lubricant on belts ?
Do the belts come under extra load when driving off in first / reverse ? |

I wouldn't use WD40 for a SLIPPING belt. You want to stop it slipping, not supporting it ![]() I have a can with "belt dressing" for this but I am not sure this is available in the UK. Got it from a friend in the US. |

The thing is im not sure its a slipping belt - why would it only slip when i start to move in first/reverse. I would have thought that a slipping belt would slip all the time ?

So it only happens when the clutch is partially engaged? I'd start with the clutch. Thrust bearings usually growl but could it be that?

Kinda ruled out the clutch. It will happen with the clutch fully out, but at low speed - say coasting along in first at low speed and you give it a little gas - you get a short bout of squealing or slowly coming to a steep hill and starting to climb it - squeal until you give it extra gas.
Its like when the engine is initially put under load - it squeals a bit Edited by voxpop |
