OMG!

WTF is all this new stuff you need to know about when buying a new tele?

The picture in our old Cathode Ray Tube tv (CRT) decided to pack in so we went out to look at new tvs.

After deciding what size of tv you want, 32", 37", 40", 42", 46", 50", 55" 60" you then have to decide on what type of tv you want.  So there is Plasma, 3D, LCD tube lit, LCD LED edge lit, LCD LED full Backlit, and would sir like the ability to adjust the amount of back lighting. Then there is the options of HD, HD ready, Freesat....

Our heads hurt after trailing around all the shops 2 days worth, then we spent another 12 hours trawling t'interweb to try and understand what one would be best for us.

Eventually we found one we wanted then you have to find a shop that actaully has one in stock.

Then you need a stand for it. Kerching

Then you need a super douper surround sound blu ray player to make the most of the big screen. Louder Kerching.

So after what seems spending an eternity we have a tv, on a new stand with a blu ray home cinema surround sound system installed.

The system is great, terrific sound and picture quality.

Buying a new car on the other hand is easy.  It has to have more than 200bhp, NOT DIESEL, be rear wheel drive, have more cylinders than the number of gears in the autobox, fit in my garage, be a practical four door family saloon with ISO Fix kiddie seat points...

So that's a 530i or bigger or a 730i or bigger, to quote Aleksandr Orlov, Simples!

Well put Andrew!

About 3 years ago, my wife decided she'd buy me a PS3 which was great. The thing is, what's the point of having a PS3 if it's not in HD? So we then bought a 42" HD TV. It was only about 6 months later my brother finally convinced me to get skyHD and now that there were more channels, I got my wife to agree too. THEN I said what's the point in having HD picture without HD sound lol!  Yes, you guessed it, just a few months ago, I finally completed the set by getting a 500W cinema 5.1 surround sound system.
Thing is, my TV though only about 3 years old but is already well out of date!! and it would appear a mere 42" is now inadequate! she want's a 50" but then as you say, there is LCD and 3D. Where will it stop?
One day you are going to be able to watch a film that looks more realistic than reality!

The mind boggles

I was in the same postion about a year ago. I went for a 42" Panasonic Bravia HD1080p bla bla bla. Also got a stand. Total came to about £600.

I simply asked people who knew because I had no idea.

Didn't get any other stuff because I didn't need it.

I've still got and old fashioned telly although windscreen. It weighs a
ton and has a wonky picture with rubbish sound. It however goes
through a Harmon Kardon amp along with the sky gubbins so I get
fantastic surround sound. Gonna be stuffed when it goes pop as I
don't think these LCD/led tellies gives as good a pic as the old
cathode ray plus I haven't a clue either.. Probably going to be
holographic tellies next lol

Some things are not born from necessity, they are merely there for fun and entertainment. Life would be dull if we only ever bought the things we truly 'need'

Exactly, if that were the case we would all be driving diesel Fiestas and not V8s!

Very true, rather than 'didn't need' I should have said 'didn't want to spend the money on.

Beer is a much better way to spend ones money...
