Hi Guys,
Comming up for the first winter of BMW ownership for me ;) Heard a lot of bad things about road hold in the snow/ice for bmws but never let that put me off, however Ive heard a lot of good things for the car with winter tyres fitted. Done a fair bit of research and was deciding between Continental Winter Contacts and Pirelli Sotto Zeros. If I go for the winter contacts I can get all 4 fitted for £618 however come summer will need to take them off and pay to get my sumer tyres put back on. My local BMW dealer are doing a set of 4 Pirellis on steel wheels (so loose the look of the alloys) for £640 plus I have 10 or 15% off that price with a discount card they sent me. What would you guys advise? Not too bothered about going to steel wheels for the winter (think the steels are 16 rather than the 17 for my alloys). My current thoughts are for convinence having another set of wheels cant be a bad thing, so was going to go down that route. Anyone tried winter tyres, if so what gets your vote? I do a lot of driving so really want the best. Look forward to the replies :D |

Winter tyres are ace. I use Toyo Snoprox.
I have a spare set of wheels which means I can swap them on / off at my convenience. If you have storage space then I would recommend this approach. |

Don't buy tyres from BMW, they are never competitive on price. Wheel rims yes, tyres no. I'm not convinced by the need for winter tyres. I've got Dunlop SP runflats 275x35x18 on the rear and 245x40x18 on the front and did not have an issue in 6" deep snow and temps of 13deg below last winter. I didn't go anywhere beyond the cars capability nor anywhere beyond my capability as a driver and I had no issues. |

the tyre and wheel package from bmw comes in only £22 more than the best tyre only price I could get, however I then get 15% off the dealer price so it would then be significantly less than the best I had seen.

What car is it you have?
You will be very lucky if you get any discount on the BMW package as its set price by BMW AG I have asked various dealers i get discount from and it was NO as they have only bought in so many sets and wont order more Eastern however will store your summer Wheels and tyres FOC Kwik fit (yes i know) are also doing a not bad price on winters via online sales only and they can also store your summer tyres
I have been putting off my choice for last 4 weeks and have watched all my tyre choices increase from around £10-£60 per tyre,so dont wait too long
If only i can find a decent set of 17s i would get my tyres from Mytyres, but it looks like i am going to buy 18s and tyres from camskill Edited by Pete330 |

Pete, I got sent a discount card from Douglas Park for any parts/service for my car. Think its 10%.
Are the Avon tyres any good? I'm really after peoples expierence with the tyres as I've never bought winter tyres before and don't want it to be wasted cash. |
