Could be just simply deteriorating with age and wants replacing.

Horns are subject to MOT I think, a tough examiner may think it doesn't meet the requirements and fail it.

I fitted an air horn to my Mini, used to make folk jump when the carved up the wee car.  More often I then got an apology wave when they heard the horn.

I had a Dixie air horn fitted to my old Senator.

Hello, unless you want one specifically with BMW written on it then any
generic 12v car horn should do and I think any would fit to the bracket that's
already there.

Should be just in front of the radiator, near a headlight or possibly even
behind the bumper in the foglight area but it'll be there somewhere!
Someone with an E39 should be able to tell you more accurately.

The E39 horn looks like this....but I don't ever remember seeing anything like that when poking my nose about my E39.

It wasn't located in front of the radiators, I'm guessing it will be burried away behind the bumper in the area beneath the headlights.  I'll have a look at my E39 Haynes book of parodies tonight to see if it sheds any light.

I think there is a link to BMW wiring diagrams somewhere in this forum.  Try searching.

According to Haynes the horn is located behind the left hand end on the front bumper.

Remove front wheel, remove wheel arch lining (held on with loads on nuts and expanding rivets) and you should then see the horns.

HTH

Haynes manuals always refer to the left and right side of the car from when you are sat in the driving seat.  So that will be the nearside of the car then, I only had the wheel arch liner off on my E39 on the right/offside of the car to fix my screen wash reservoir hose connection and I don't recall seeing the horns.
