Hi, I recently bought an 03 316i tourer with 36000 miles Automatic. Last week it started juddering and the exhaust emission deteriorated light came on. Local garage said it was a coil pack which the garage i bought it from did replace. But on the way there all kinds of lights came on and the radio died and it was totally underpowered doing about 30mph ! Anyway the problem seems to be solved but Im now a bit paranoid about it happening again - the eml light and exhaust emission light do stay on for a few seconds longer than the other lights after ignition - is this normal or is my problem on its way back ? Plus the car does seem to be rather underpowered for overtaking - fine at top speed but is its because its Auto that its not so quick off the mark ? There is the option to use the manual change also which is a bit quicker. Just wondering if i have a dud !!

Sounds to me like it went into limp mode.  This limits the power of the engine as a damage limitation exercise.  New coil in and a reset of the system and it will be fine.

You sound like me, you are worried that becasue a warning light didn't go off after starting that it will happen again and each and everytime you start the car you watch the lights to make sure they go out.  This makes you think that they stay on longer but the don't.  Nowt to worry about.

The auto will make it slower off the mark than the manual equivalent but you will gain at higer road speeds with a lower engine rpm thus a quieter ride.

I drove a 316i courtesy car albiet an E90 version and I thought it was slow but I was comparing to my current car which was in for warranty work at the time.  For swifter overtaking try knocking it into Sport mode before using the kickdown, this holds the gears for longer before changing up, getting the most out of the engine.

PS Get your autobox serviced.
