hi again this car is gonna be the death of me well here goes

the problem is about 2 weeks ago went out to car last thing at night, then next morning got in it and it started to turn over, then it was as if  the battery was flat just a clicking noise.i got the AA out who tested battery and said it was very good they testedthe alternator and said there was no problem, started me up first turn of key.

now this week it did it again exactly like last time it started first time with jump leads.went to work finished after 8 hours went out it did it again so again had to use leads, this time as i was turning key on headlights came on only briefly then went off and car started.this has now happened 3 times this week, a friend gave me a bit of a push no jump leads and it started to turn over till it started to click again. he suggested that it may be the starter motor? any suggestions would be gratefully received  many thanks in advance

I would say it was the battery.  I don't know what the AA did, but it sounds like classic battery failure.  They go suddenly with no warning and once you get a charge in it, after a drive following a jump start, they don't then hold the charge and you are back at square 1.

Anyone else?

+1. The battery could be a tricky thing, and is very easy to remove any doubts about it. Try to get a good battery on a loan from someone and attempt to start the car, just to make sure.

The fact that it jump starts ok tends to point even more towards a bad battery. If you don't want to remove the battery check the voltage(it should be V12.5+, if it's lower, the battery is dying).

If it's a BMW battery, it should have an indicator on the top of it.  Green = good condition, black = in need of recharge and yellow = knackered, needs a new one.  I might have the yellow and black mixed up but it's a quick visual indication.  There is usually a key to tell you what's what next to the indicator.
