Buying a diesel can be a lottery.  You don't say what age of car.

The oldest ones can suffer from turbo failures and slightly newer ones suffer from swirl flap failures both of which can write off the car following catestrophic engine failure.  Swirl flaps can be removed and replaced with blanks.  Google it and it will make your eyes water.

They recommend additional oil changes over and above those specified by BMW to gaurd against turbo failure.

They give good performance with good economy if you can live with a noisey diesel, the smell and the posibility of wallet busting repair bills.

Put me off buying one.

They can do 500k easily provided they're looked after properly...

1. Swirl flap removal a must
2. Oil Service every 10k

Info on swirl flap removal here and here

If there is bombproof service history showing over and above the manufacturers recommended oil changes then gives you some peace of mind.

If it is an E60 then you don't need to worry about turbo failure, but it will need its swirl flaps removed.

As a relatively newcomer, I very much appreciate the debate on swirl flaps. I have a 2008 520D, with 27k km. Should I be concerned? Is there any history of post 2004 (when mods were introduced) problems? From the description of the mod, it seems that the weakest link ... fixing screws ......(on to a stronger operating rod linkage) may still be an issue?

At 2008, model you should be o.k. one of my earlier links states cars made between 2001 and 2005 were affected.

Yours is still quite new, the early ones have been failing after mibbie 4 to 6 years.  I haven't heard of newer ones failing on other forums I snoop about on.

I have heard of fuel pump failure on newer 520d.  Pump fails or a seal fails and diesel gets into the sump and you get a warning message saying your oil level is too high.

Remapping.

I wouldn't do it myself, insurance companies to tell, invalidation of any warranty, overloading automatic transmissions...for what a few more bhp and lbsft (which you may never notice nor prove unless rolling road tests are used before and after) or a smoother power delivery which you may notice.

I'm a great believer of keeping things standard as the manufacturer intended.  But that's just me.

Was yours made between 2001 and 2005? See earlier post above.

The same rules apply to the E61 as E60 as it is the same engine.

You can e-mail the guys in the links above with your chassis number for a difinitive answer.
