I hope someone out there can help.

I have a 2002 530d, if sometimes goes into failsafe mode in 2nd when trying to get into 3rd. I had the transmission oil changed last year around about this time of year and it seem to fix the problem. Well it’s happing again now I’ve tried changing the fluid again is to no avail.  the diagnostic only shows problems changing from 2nd. could it be the cold weather or electrical ? Surely if it were mechanical it would be happing all the time.  The weather has been mild last couple of days and it’s been fine! Help.....

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It needs to go to an Automatic Transmission Specialist for correct diagnostic, anything else is just wasting time and £££s

It could be a problem with anything from a wheel sensor to one of the electrical solenoids within the transmission that control the fluid within the autobox.

Have you had a diagnostic check done?  From what you have said it sounds like it is the shift solenoid between 2nd and 3rd gears. I had something similar on my E39.  Getting this confirmed by a specialist will help.

Changing the fluid would only have helped if you were low in fluid.

I'm fairly sure that you autobox is a GM made box rather than a ZF made box.

A warning light on the dash means you have only 3rd (mibbie 4th too) gear and that you should only really drive it to a transmission specialist as you will be slipping the various clutchs within the box shortening their life.  If a warning light has come on there will be a diagnostic code left within the ECU.

HTH

Andrew

Hi Thanks for the reply, you’re right I do need a Transmission specialist. My local garage has simply said I need a new gearbox I’m convinced this is not correct.

yes it is a GM box i've had a look underneath

p.s the warning light resets when car is swiched off and back on again

Garages, including BMW, will not touch an autobox.  All they say is "you need a new one" as they do not have the skills and knowledge to fix an autobox.  They will have the skills and knowledge to do wholesale replacements.

When my E39 autobox packed up my local BMW told me that they couldn't help (they did read the diagnostics and printed it out for me to pass on) but passed on details of an ZF approved and hence BMW approved transmission specialist in Glasgow.  He sorted easily and very quickly, I did part with £700 right enough but....  My E39 transmission warning light reset itself after failing but it came back on.  When it came back on I then took it to the transmission specialist.  I wasn't taking any chances with this car.
