    Posted: 02-April-2011 at 23:03

All,

Just picked up a 1988 E30 320i Automatic Cabriolet and have only one problem with it so far!  When I put it into drive and start to accelerate, there's a knocking noise coming from the gear box!  Once it changes into 2nd it stops and drives fine - anyone have any ideas what may be causing it and how do I go about fixing it?

Rav

Sounds like your gearbox has a problem. I'd suggest simply getting hold of a second hand or recon box and just swapping yours out. Only a speciallist can fix an autobox.

go to a autobox specialist! Most garages will not have the in depth knowledge to diagnose an autobox and just do the "you need another one" exercise.

I have a good local autobox man and he is able to repair a lot for reasonable money before the whole box is changed. And how do you know the condition of the "new" box isn't worse? Never buy one without a short warrantee IMHO.

+1

Spot on there Sir.

Don't even go to BMW as they are clueless about autoboxes too, it was them who told me to go to a transmission specialist with my E39 when it developed a fault.

If it has a transmission dipstick (which at that age I would assume it does as that is before the sealed for life nonsense) you can check the fluid for low level and top up with the correct fluid.

Anything else and you are wasting your time and your money.

Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series!
