Is the phone able to use 02? I believe that it has a different wavelength to most other suppliers. The phones on my cars have always been Motorola ones and I have always used Vodafone chips which work fine. Make sure that the phone has BMW software on it. It should show BMW on the screen when it boots up. If it does not have the correct software in it, expect your battery to go flat after about 14 hours left standing with the phone plugged in!

This sounds silly, but the BMW software switches the phone off after half an hour or so. If it did not do this, the computer, speakers, radio and other items would carry on running, using upwards of 4 amps. Took me a few years and a couple of new batteries before I worked out what was happening! You can check it to see if its working OK by looking at the light near the gear stick. It goes out when the system is in "sleep" mode. If in doubt, don't leave the phone in the car overnight.

Have fun - the 7 is a great car to drive in all its varieties prior to 2002. The later ones may be OK but I don't like the styling. I'm on my third 7, the last two both being E38s.

I did 140K in my E32, 168K in my last E38, and the current one is currenly about to be fitted with full Alpina suspension at 140K miles.

That's a nice one Alpina suspension costly I'm sure but worth it!!

Anyway the phone is a factory fitted bmw phone that's hard wired into the car from build I'm sure you know the one i mean the one before the little silver motorola mobile that i had in another e38 2001

Do you think that maybe it's just to old for modern sims?

Is there such a thing as a bluetooth module that i could retrofit? i think i read somewhere about it going in the boot?
