Guys Anyone got any suggestions for a gearbox “whine” – most prominent in 2nd gear, but defo getting worse…. Been quoted Ł875 + vat for a full recon, but that’s prob more than the cars worth… What are my options? Have I got any?? J Will it run forever anyway – what’s likely to happen? Cheers |

328i second hand gear boxes are as cheap as chips! No need to recon. You are talking manual box, right?
On the other hand, as long as it works who cares about the whine? (considering the value of the car you mentioned) |

all good points - i'm not really conserned about the whine... more the resulting damage to anything else? or will it not affect anything else?? i was just looking for info as to what symptoms i will get and when its time to change.... and will any gearbox from the same era fit? |

no you will need the same gearbox. Might well be that it was used in different BMW models. The worst which can happen is that it goes bang and you need to come home on a AA flatbed. Just decide yourself when you think the whine starts to get too loud. Is the whine related to a specific gear? |

yeah - see above - most obvious in 2nd and even then it is only apparent dotting about at 25 mph.... still goes like the clappers.... |

I'd live with the whine but get the fuel pump sorted. Unless it a real minter there's no point in spending a lot of money on it. |
