hi guys thanks for all your advise on my e39, turned out to be a broken thermostate for my overheating not head gasket! but still cant sort out my missfire and no power hardly at all.would it be poss that my air flow sensor is nackered?or may be another sensor that could cause this problem.

You are quite correct, it could be any other sensor. 

You need to take it to a garage that can read the diagnostics.

It could be crank/cam/temp/O2/MAF sensor at fault or blocked EGR system, split inlet hoses, faulty spark plug or ignition coil. Trying to pin point any of those are a nightmare without a diagnostic check.  A diagnostic check is usually a standard fee of 1 hours labour.

Depending on the age of the car it could be that the catalytic converters are breaking up and impeding the flow of the exhaust gasses.

Is it an automatic per chance?

yes it is an auto and can you tell me if it has a egr?as im not sure thanks for your help.1997 528i auto
