I recently purchased a 05 545i and after idling for a short
while 1 puff of smoke comes out of the exhaust. I have had
a BMW shop look into this to no avail. (no lights on dash)
Car drives great other than the occasional puff of smoke
after leaving a drive thru or gas pump.I am being told that
this could be possibly caused by faulty valve seals that
would require replacing the heads because it all one piece.
Is this accurate and is there anything else that should be
checked? Any reply's greatly appreciated. Also car has
84,000 miles and looks to be serviced regularly.

Welcome to the forum, glad to see another person on here with the best BMW.

Heads are not one peice, you can buy all the parts.  Might cost a bit but everything will be available.

What colour is the smoke, blue smoke would be oil which could mean valve stem seals or piston rings.  I doubt that at 84,000 miles the engine would have worn enough for that to happen especially if it has been serviced regularly.

White smoke might just simply be water vapour collecting when the car has been idling.  When it is idling the engine will be running slightly cooler than the norm so water vapour may be more likely to collect.  This will then be ejected when you press the loud pedal.  Of course with it being an E60, you have no indication of the engine temp as there is no sodding temp gauge.

Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series!
