I have a 2005 320d.  It was having problems with a mis-fire, mostly when cornering hard, so i changed the fuel filter.  After doing so it failed to start all together, i was advised that it was a faulty fuel pump and that by replacing the fuel filter i had released the pressure in the tank and as the fuel pump was faulty it was unable to rebuild the pressure and hence start the car.  Tonight i have replaced the fuel pump and it still fails to start, the fuel pump is working but there is no fuel at the injectors. I have code read it and it is now reading rail pressure sensor signal and rail pressure monitoring on engine start.

Has anyone had any similar problems or have any suggestions as to what might be the problem??
Many thanks in advance

I would have said that after replacing the fuel filter all you should have been able to do was to bleed the fuel system to get the engine to run again.  Diesel  fuel systems need to be bled of air otherwise they will not work.  Replacing the fuel pump on a diesel engine is no mean feat as it needs to be properly timed in the ignition timing cycle so to speak.
Are you sure you have got the fuel pump properly timed and the whole fuel system free of air?

I'm stuggling the see how cornering hard would affect the engine to allow it to miss fire.  I would investigate the EGR system, these can build up with 'soot' and hinder performance/mimic a miss fire.  There is a thread on here that shows how to clean out this.

I have heard of this problem on modern petrol cars too (the changing of fuel filters, then non starting).

As Andrew points out, it requires bleeding.
Best Wishes

Certainly Andrew.

I had/caused exactly that problem after servicing my daughters Skoda Fabia (she's changed it now, she has one of those Smart for two jobbies ).

I called my mechanic mate, he popped in on his way home and bled it, and said to me "they're all mostly like that now"

So I can only pass his comments on to you !

The Fabia was petrol
Best Wishes

Cheers Nigel

I'm trying to remember I think it was in the E39 Haynes Manual that to change a fuel filter you need to depresurise the fuel system.  Start engine, pull fuse out for fuel pump, wait for engine to stop (the engine running sucks the last fuel out of the lines and hence depressurises the system) change fuel filter, put fuse back in, turn ignition on wait for a few minutes as the system will self prime with the ignition on (sending 12v to the fuel pump) then turn the engine over.

I have had this problem with my Transit and it was all to do with pressure. I was advised to fill the filter with diesel and reinstall. I did that and it worked a treat. Hope this helps.
