i have a classic bmw 2002 tourer 1973 and the engine has gone what is the best engie to put in it would you put an m40 318is e30 or m20 325i e30 or 325i e36 im going to do it my self and then maybe sell the car after so what do all the o2 boys want in there cars thanks from spencer

To keep somewhat in period and the spirit of the '02 I'd imagine that another M10 is the way to go, or else an M42.  I suspect that the M44 would be a little bit more complex electrically as its designed with a bit more electronic brainery.
 
I'd guess that an M20 would be fairly straightforward too but M50's and M52's would be nice but a bit harder work for the same reason as the M44.  The main downside to a straight 6 engines I'd imagine is that it adds a bit more weight over the nose and might spoil the handling a bit.
 
I know that the S14 engine has been dropped in a few, a pal is tipping away slowly at one as a project, and I'd say that should be good fun.
