Yet again I have just been in contact with a person on the South Coast of England, car for sale £200.00: fault no coolant getting into the TOP OF THE ENGINE.
he's pulled it, and is going to look at replacing/removing the thermostat; It is not a major Job, even if you followed BMW recommedations. I took short cuts and did mine. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW MUCH GUNK WAS IN THERE, IT SHOULD HAVE PRODUCED ABOUT A COUPLE OF PINTS OF COOLANT, OUT OF MY DOUBLE OVERHEAD CAM 4 CYLINDER 1800, I GOT 1/2 A CUP?
I was honest there can be other issues, but if this just starts to happen, where the DIAL SAYS IT IS STILL OK, LIFT THE HOOD AND IF THE ENGINE IS TWO HOT TO TOUCH, AND AFTER IT COOLS DOWN THE FUEL LINES AND VACUUM LINE IS SOFT, THEN IT IS NOT GETTING COOLANT.
I DON'T CARE WHAT "BMW" SAY;
THEY WERE DESIGNED TO RUN AUTOBANS NOT RUN AROUND IN THE UK WHERE YOU CAN GET STUCK IN TRAFFIC FOR HOURS, IF THE THERMOSTAT OPENS AND IS CHECKED NOT BY MILES BUT BY USAGE, AND WHEN I SAY THIS IF IT YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE IT IS ALL SHORT JOURNEYS, I CAN ONLY GUESS UNDER TEN MILES WITH FEW HOLD UPS, I WOULD WANT IT OUT EVERY YEAR, IF you are like me who maybe drives 3000 to 5000 miles per year, and the most now is in the NORTH WEST OF SCOTLAND BETWEEN GLASGOW AND SKYE, then once you have done it, as long as you don't get stuck over night in the snow, and run the engine, your thermostat  should keep you going for a lot longer.
I WILL TELL YOU THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BMW OR ANY OTHER VEHICLE, ALUMINIUM/ALLOY ENGINES PRODUCE : - BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT IS A WHITE POWDER TYPE RUST, SOME POTMETALS ALSO DO THE SAME, this can clog up not just water lines/systems; they can effect any Hydro/Carbon Fuels, including your central heating, It has caused problems with low grade Nuclear reactors that are use in MOST PETROCHEMICAL PLANTS THAT HAVE WHAT THEY CALL A CRACKER.
I have had to repair crackers Same thing OVERHEATING.
reduce your opening temperature THERMOSTAT, it can save you loosing your car if it siezes; or more.BMW in Hamburg still refuse to comment.
This seams now the major or the begining of cause of all engine related issue's.
I will not being mentioning any more about HEATING other Than I have driven a car at high speed, and the coolant went the engine seized, and it TOTALLED THE CAR, I WAS FORTUNATE TO SURVIVE.
Be warned, and Know I am not being paid by BMW or any one else, but if they want to send me money I will take it, I am only passing on what I am finding out about my present car.
