Well, despite efforts, the car looks terminal (likely blown head gasket and all associated costs) so it went on to eBay. Man; but those vultures really expect a bargain. It never reached it's (I think) low reserve so I'll ask in here. Is there anyone likely to be interested in an otherwise fairly nice gunmetal grey 318i? She's got about 135k on the clock and is currently festering on my drive, so she has to go.

Is there anyone interested in providing a home for the old girl, who is at present residing in Hastings? Ideally with a not too insulting price? With apologies if this is not the right forum; I'll put her up for sale wherever I can now.

Thanks,
Steve

How much would you want? I assume it's buyer collect?

p.s. would you like this linked/moved to the Adverts thread??
Cats know your every thought.

Good luck with your intended sale, but it isn't really much of a sought after car, being the 4 pot.

Like Simon has said, what sort of money are you looking for ?

As a sort of a guide, I have a working 528i SE auto of 2000 vintage, I doubt that is worth much more than a grand in working order !
Best Wishes

Nigel

Hi. I had hoped to get £500 ono for it and yes, it would be a towaway because it's on SORN now. If that's considered too optimistic, then perhaps I will have to swallow pride. By all means move it to the ads thread. Thanks and sorry - I've not been too smart at driving in this forum.

It wouldn't even be tow away, it'd need a four wheel lift I'm afraid, being sorn.

All this will affect its value, unless you are very lucky, and someone local wants it.
Best Wishes

Why did the head gasket fail, has it been overheated ?

We replaced the engine in my daughters boyfriends 525i because it had been cooked, the cost of rebuilding it was out of the question.
Best Wishes

Yep; I drove it home one night and the temp gauge suddenly shot up to and beyond the red. I left it to cool for a couple of hours, then limped home. It will last about 10 miles before doing the same. Thermostat was removed and water runs through but the head gasket seems to be the most likely cause.

Such a shame. I had an E36 which I loved until someone T-boned and wrote it off. I'd always preferred the look of the E46 but this was a real disappointment. I subsequently heard that E46 engines had a reputation for being more fragile but don't know if there's any credence to that. I'd have another E36 again if only I could afford another but I fear that's unlikely now.

From comments in here, maybe the eBay bids weren't so poor after all. If I had the space, I'd break it and hopefull get nearly £500 for parts. However, like most housing estate dwellers, space is something I simply don't have.
