I know I've posted audio from the BMW radio club station before but here's a vid of me actually speaking with them.

I was sitting tuning around this afternoon and heard DK0BMW on the air and he was very strong. DK0BMW is the Amateur Radio Club within the BMW factory in Regensburg. This nice QSL card is on its way to me to confirm our QSO (contact)

The chap I spoke with is Hans and his home callsign is DL5RC, Here's the video (MM0DXC is me)

Nice one mate.

Quite cool speaking to people hundreds of miles away. Even more cool they are into their BMWs as well

Your phonetic alphabet is a wee bit different from the one we use.

What's furthest distance you have reached with your signal

Great stuff mate. I should try to work him sometime too.

Gary, from my house I've managed in the right conditions to speak to someone in Indonesia and Japan.

Cheers Gary, Our phonetic alphabet is exactly the same as is used by the forces / Police etc but due to the nature of the mode of some of our transmissions (Single Side Band as opposed to FM) substitutions are acceptable. On SSB for example, "Mike" can be mixed up with "Nine" so "Mexico" can be used as its not easily mistaken. We wouldn't use stupid words like "Monkey" as a monkey may be called something else in another language but Mexico is Mexico.

It is very common to make contacts all the way around the world, Australia / New Zealand etc. I have personally made tens of thousands of contacts since I've been licenced. My favorite contact of all time happened the other weekend at the Lighthouse where I had a contact with a guy driving his car in Kingston, Jamaica..........Ya Maaaan !!

I Just thought it was cool to make a contact with the radio club of the BMW factory, located in the factory and operated by the people who actually make the cars we drive.

Why AM?

Many [many] moons ago I used CB radio to help me thru traffic jams, but then it went FM legal and was cr4p and no use at all.

There was no mention of AM, as mentioned above, the mode was Single Side Band, in this case Upper Side Band, hence the USB led being lit on the radio. Admittedly, SSB is a derivative of AM but a completely different mode.

There is no doubt that CB radio had/has its place and yes when it became legal and on FM in 1981, the standards of operation dropped dramatically as almost every child got a CB for christmas. Kids playing music and chatting a load of rubbish about Adam Ant and the like took over.

Amateur Radio can really only be compared to CB radio as the police radio can be, there is a radio involved but the similarities stop there. Amateur Radio is a hobby generally enjoyed by intelligent people who wish to communicate over vast distances, push the boundaries of radio communication and learn by experimentation in radio theory and operation. A bit different to "Breaker breaker, I'm looking for a Smokie Report" in a fake American accent by people whose Proton cars are painted like the General Lee and have musical air horns, go Line Dancing dressed as cowboys and smoke roll ups !

No mate, I had my headset on but with the headphones unplugged to give audio to the video which is why I misheard Hans asking if I wanted to exchange cards and thought he was asking if I wanted to change my car !! Wacko
