hi folks, can anyone help with my question...

what causes over-pressure in the expansion bottle of a 98 E39..528 petrol ???
there is no emulsification of the oil on the oil filler cap, and when the expansion bottle cap is removed, the water fizzes like champagne....any thoughts ?????

thank in advance

jimbo

PS...its not my current car, its another one I'm thinking of buying

Other than what Indian says.....

What is the engine temp gauge like?  The E39 should rise to the middle of normal and stay there and not move a mm.  If it does move to the hot then something is wrong with the coolant system.

When you say over pressure is the coolant leaking past the cap?

The system is designed to be under a certain amount of pressure.  If you are brave enough to take the cap off when the engine is hot or running you will always get a release of pressure.

If there signs it has leaked past the cap it could just be that the seals on the cap are perished.  Even the youngest E39 will be over 10 years old now so rubber things may start to be showing signs of their age.
