shaking my head in disbelief today in Douglas Park BMW Hillington.

Guy in picking his car up after getting replacement engine under warranty because of timing belt failure. They made a big play about how they had to replace driveshafts as well under warranty. At that point I thought, dealership is doing right by this customer but that didn't last long!!

Then they exclaimed that they had to replace another belt but it wasn't covered under warranty as it was a wear and tear item.(unsure of what belt it was but let's be honest no other belt replacement should cost a lot whilst replacing an engine)
they explained that the customer would have to pay for it before the car was returned!

Thousands in repair costs and they couldn't swallow the cost of a belt.

Shame on you Douglas Park but then I'm not really surprised by this from an outfit like yourselves

If it was me I would've told them to shove the bill up their arse!!!!!

This happened to me as well. New aircon pump fitted under BMW extended warranty but had to pay £12 for new serpentine belt. Wheels also not covered by this warranty. It does redeem itself IMHO as no cash needs to be handed over over for repair (unless you choose to have an excess) as opposed to paying out and then trying to reclaim from an independent warranty company.

Arnold Clark don't own Douglas Park and I use Hillington branch for all five of our cars and the service we get is spot on. My E30 when it's in they very seldom charge for any work,In cases when we've had cars outside warranty periods DP's have always managed to get contributions from BMW which near as damn it cover the total costs.

All main dealers have their moments and people have good and bad experiences but, people always bring out the moans but, very seldom do they highlight the good service.

It does sound bad that the dealership were charging the guy for a belt but,tbh why should they pick up the cost as it's a warranty claim and BMW are already nailing the dealer down on the cost of the repairs anyway. I think I'd be taking up the belt cost with BMW as it's them who decree what is chargeable and not under the warranty conditions.

Whilst not exactly being a Douglas Park fan, I can see their point, albiet from a jobsworth point of view.  Any item which wears out, is not covered by a warranty.  Serpentine drive belts, pads, discs, clutches, shockers all wear out so they are just holding the letter of the law.  Probably would have been about £40 right enough by the time BMW fitted it.  You would think that the dealer would have fudged 'another hour of a techs time' on the job card of the engine replacement to cover the cost of the belt

I would have argued that they could have put the old belt back on.

The two drive belts in my engine bay are 10 years old and have whizzed round for over 82,000 miles.  Neither of which shows any sign of cracking or any real wear.  I had to replace my E39 delt at a much lower mileage due to its condtion but the same make of belt (Contitech) is holding very well on the E60.

Wonder what kinda BM it was, aren't they all timing chains or do some of the smaller engined stuff have timing belts instead of chains?  I'm sure I've read that some are now belt drive camshaft engines, boooo.

I am within 5 minutes of Douglas Park and Fairbairns at Giffnock are no more than 10 minutes away. There's about 6 dealers within 25 miles.

Anything I need from the dealers I get from Eastern in Edinburgh.

Tells you all you need to know about the Glasgow/Lanarkshire dealers.

I've always had very good service from Fairbairns at Giffnock.  Parts counter even more so.

Its horses for courses.  Some will have a good experience and some won't.

Don't even go there with Douglas Park.

I'd agree 100% with you Andy,I dealt with Henry brothers for years and they were expensive ans service/sales was excellent but, when Douglas Park took over them I had allsorts of issues with Kyle St and then I started using Hillington Douglas Parks and they have been very good for the past five years having exceeded my expectations more then a few times .I have had issues with Eastern in Edinburgh also Peter Vardy in Edinburgh's service dept is not good but, their sales guys where really good.

It is horses for courses as you say but,it is true we only hear about the bad experiences people have at dealers and seldom hear of the good experience.

I find the dealerships are about the relationship that you build with them over time and getting to know the staff well helps bigtime.

Nope not since the M20 that was in the E30s, and the early M70s that were in 850i E31 and 750i E32, even the smaller M10s and bigger M30 engines had timing chains. All Bmw engines are chains these days.
