Hi,
A couple of months ago I decided the time was right to take the plunge and enjoy the experience of taking delivery of a new BMW. Delivery was estimated as being the beginning of July which somehow became mid June.. 3 days before we went off on holiday, so the car languished in the garage for a fortnight with 100 miles on the clock.
since we got home I have had few oppertunitys to use the car but the miles have crept up to around 450.  On a trip to Dundee on Sunday we had a chance to try our the handling on the twisty section over the Sidlaw hills and we immediately felt something was not right.. Handling round right handers was fine, left handers totally crap! car felt like it had a broken spring (which it didnt)  I specced the adaptive suspension which all the road tests recommend, looking forward to the latest thing in driving pleasure and roadholding.
So, back to John Clarks in Dundee and asked for a mechanic to take it for a drive with me so I could see his reaction, he drove like snail and said that there was nothing wrong so I said drive it like a BMW should be driven and he struggled with it on left handers to say the least although he said that I made him drive too fast to do so.
They put it on the dreaded computer which says "nothing wrong" so they are scratchcing their empty heads!.

Now the car is lying in Dundee, 500 miles on the clock, and they are going to thrash it around trying this and that, so much for trying to run it in, this is not what I signed up for, this was meant to be a long term purchase with ownership being passed on to Michele after 3 years to replace her Octavia which is now 6 years old (and faultless)
Awaiting phone call from them today.
Had to vent my frustration somewhere!!!!!Angry
George.

Nightmare George, I know how much you guys were looking forward to getting your hands on this. At the end of the day, you can still formally reject the vehicle but I hope it doesn't come to that.

How about tyre pressures?

It is not unheard of for new BMWs to be supplied to customers without the correct amount of air in the tyres.

When I got the first service on my Z3 I was asked how I found the handling?

I said I found it a bit hard, but there again I had moved up from a Golf to sports suspension on the Z3, so wasn't too sure how it should feel

Imagine to my surprise, when they told me that the suspension packing blocks had not been removed when the car was delivered LOL

Manager at John clarks now on the case, looks like my word against theirs. BMW are arranging a back to back test car & since neither Dundee or Aberdeen have one with adaptive suspension they are sending one up from down south (apparently).
All the road tests recommend the adaptive suspension upgrade and none of them state that the car handles like a barge in standard(comfort) mode.
Cambell, the dealer says that if the car needs major surgery then they will order me a replacement car.
Andrew, tyre pressures were the first check and pressure sensors fitted to wheels proved spot on.
Neil, reminds me of when we tried putting blow up balls on the inside of the leaf springs on our Ford Escorts to try and firm up the suspension!
Love the rest of the car, engine sounds a flat but goes OK, love the looks and colour,oh,, and also the music systemCool

Neil surely leaving suspension packing bolts in till first service must have damaged something?

Keep us posted on what the outcome is from the dealer.

What engine is in the car if you think it sounds a bit flat?

Engine is a 2 litre 4 cyl petrol turbo'd to 245hp. Would have preferred it to be a six cyl but my accountant prefers the economy and emissions on the 328.

Is the accountant reffered to above, "the wife"?LOL

A new 6 pot petrol BMW is a rare thing these days but when you think about it, the 6 pot M52TU engine from say an E39 528i wasn't even good for 200bhp so 245bhp from 28 badged engine isn't shabby at all!  Power is power regardless of the number of cylinders.  The number of cylinders just affects how the engine sounds and how smooth it is.

That's because the 2.8 s were restricted by putting a 2 litre manifold on it. Run around 210-230 unrestricted

Hope bmw pull there finger out with this one !!

Latest update,.......
Last Tuesday Michele and I were meeting friends at Elie in Fife for the afternoon and we were running a bit late which meant making a bit more "progress" to make up time. those of you who know about the roads in that part of Fife are aware that they are a bit challenging to the suspension and unlike the coastal route where the speed limit is around 35mph you can crack on.
I suppose we were getting used to the bouncy bouncy damping which we have complained about but about 5 miles from our destination the bouncing abruptly stopped!, we both noticed it and the car became totally different!.
perhaps the more extreme conditions triggered something or  the cars "brain" decided it was going to play the game.
Almost a week now and all seems well, I have not told the dealer yet but I will give it a full week and contact them. I will insist that the fault is on record in case it re-occurs but hopefully from now on things are looking goodThumbs Up.
