I have spotted a 1985 E23 735i SE Auto for sale locally and wondered if anyone can offer some advice quite quickly..?

It has nearly a full history, 100k, recently serviced. a few spots of rust on the rear arch, alloys, cloth interior. MOT ran out last xmas. last owner 9 years. ohh and its in Alpine white.

They are asking £300 pounds for it.. sounds good but being new to E23's i'm not too sure..

I'm not to mechanical so if you could advise on what visual checks need to be done, and what common problems these E23's can suffer from it will help me.

Can someone advise? I'm going to look at it tonight to get a feel for it.

Many thanks in advance.!

Hi

did you see it? Basically look at the electrics (windows, seats etc etc), how it's been serviced, tyres (metric?), and the rest is basically std used car bits.
But they can be veryu reliable.
Body wise, front wings can kill it, so make sure there is not rust at the tips of the wings, and the rears start to rust as well.
Leather (if fitted) needs to be untorn, as worn or faded leather can be brought back to life with food.
Let us know how you got on!

I have had a look and it seems fine, needs MOT, Tax. slight rust on rear arches. cloth interior..

its got some larger front and rear spoiler with fogs, that I havent seen on many 735's.. not some boy racer kit tho. looks smart and original..

havent been inside yet as i had a look without the owner around.. so havent checked electrics.

done 100k with part service history. used daily untill a few months ago.. just needs a polish up to look normal....

will let you know of any progress..

is this the normal sort of price??

They don't go for much, really good cars rarely break the £1k barrier, so an mot less car is around the £100 to £300 mark. Try knocking him back to £200/250.
The front and rear spoiler set could be the BBS set that was available for the e23 7 at the time. These are hard to come by these days.

OK, After my E30 Conv needing 4 new boots and a annual inspection, plus my TV blowing up last week, I have decided not to go for it..

Many thanks anyway for your helpfull comments, maybe it was not the bargain I thought it was.. looked smashing tho!

My friend bought one last year for £500. Nothing has gone wrong, it does not have any rust and passed it's MOT with flying colours. He only reckened it would be good for a year when he bought it, but now thinks he might get 5 years out of it. Good car and very confortable. Handles well to, on a par with a six.
