The alarm on my '95 740 sets perfectly with the remote but after 4 to 8 hours the alarm goes off.  I have tried switching off the ultrasonics with the switch by the glovebox (to eliminate spider triggering!!) but the problem still remains.  A call to the main dealer prompted the response that it would be long and potentially costly repair as they would heve to monitor it for the full 4 to 8 hours and then try and sort out why it had triggered.  Can anyone offer any suggestions for a solution.  When locked by key there is no problem but then the car is not protected by the alarm. Thanks, Mark.

Let's assume that nobody is playing a trick on you, and the alarm is going off (Or is that coming on!) of it's own volition.

Seeing as none of the gubbins of the alarm system should be "Time based", the only thing that could set it off is a lack or a drain of power????  Have you got a decent battery in the car...and is it fully charging up?  Is the alarm of the type that would "Alarm" at a drain of power?  If I'm right, then the cut-in point must be wrong, because you still have enough power to start the car in the morning.  If I'm wrong, then I'm sorry I haven't a clue.

its quite possible that a faulty capacitor or IC is drifting over time inside the alarm control box causing it to go off, or your handbrake might not be fully working, allowing the car to move a little setting off the alarm, the other thing could be as old shape says, the battery, the only way to check that really is with a multimeter. do you leave your mobile in the car? maybe its ringing triggering the alarm?

on my old e36 the battery cells leaked inside the battery backed up siren and caused it to go off intermittantly, i had to wash the circuit board and dry it off with compressed air and replace the batterys and a capacitor to fix it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
