I've just bought a mint E28 528i from 1987 and the middle silencer is blowing like hell. Where can I pick a new one up? It seems thst this car was rare in it's year of manufacture and parts are a bit of a problem. I'm new to the BMW game, so please excuse my naiivity if this isn't the case. I'm also after a good BMW independent specialist in Edinburgh/Glasgow.   Ta....

Hurrah! Another Scot.

See http://www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=21 and http://jwestwood.demon.co.uk/bmwcc/ for what is going on in Scotland with the BMWCC.

See http://www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7440&PN=1 for Glasgow garages.

And try contacting James about the exhaust - details at http://jwestwood.demon.co.uk/bmwcc/c.html

Yes, I've joined the Club already and am keen to get involved. before I can take the car anywhere, however, I need to get a middle section on the exhaust to stop it sounding like a machine gun, and I also need to trace a little oil leak and sort that. I'm going to steam clean the underside of the car tonight to clear off all the oil, which seems like it may have been there for ages and then I'll know where to look. the car is a minter, loads and loads of history and well looked after generally. Everything works and it was just the sort of weekend 'toy' I have been looking for. 160K on the clock.

I spoke to the guy at the Glasgow GSF today and he said that he couldn't get me one; told me that the 582i SE Auto was 'rare' for the 1987 year. I could really do with not having to resort to BMW, because I suspect that the job will cost me mega bicks.

Have you tried eurocarparts ? Worse case scenario is a BMW dealer, i have checked the ETK and the centre section should be about £150+vat (not so bad ?)

The BMW part number is 18 12 1 178 377 (Front silencer)

Damp squib time.....

If I remember correctly, the middle box can't be replaced on it's own.  Well, it can, but a lot of meddling.  You may have to buy a full system.  I stand to be corrected on this issue, though.

You should also give motormec a call and speak with Andy. I use them all the time for my six, and they sell genuine BMW parts. Have a look at there web site on http://www.motormec.co.uk They will deliver anywhere in the country and i bought a full system for my six about a year and a half ago. Genuine BMW parts are not cheap mind you.

Thanks for all you help everyone. I'm going to take the car (sounding still like a machine gun!) over to BM Motors in Lanarkshire, I think.  I really liked the sound of him on the phone today.

Cheers all.

In priase of a well known National Fitting Service. I took the 5 to a well known outfitter hoping for a quick fix for my exhaust problem. They said thay'd order the bits in a fit the exhaust the following day. The following day came and went, as did the next couple of days. I phoned them and moaned about the time it was taking them. They said that their suppliers couldn't source one and that they'd have to go directly to BMW for the parts. Because it took them so long, they have agreed (without any prompting from me) to fit the genuine BMW parts whilst only charging me for the original amount quoted. The parts must be costing them a lot more than that. I'm very pleased with this service, even if I've had to wait a few days longer then I hoped.

I think I know which National outfit you mean.  "You can't get better....."?

I had to use them in January whilst stuck miles from home and in an area where I didn't know the cheap places.  I rang or entered around 5 or 6 retailers, and "???" were the cheapest by £125 (For a full Ex. system).  They were even cheaper than an aftermarket place that only sold (Not fitted) the pipes!  Within the 5 or 6 retailers, some of them used the same suppliers...... so "???" must have special deals with those suppliers.  The service was superb, I even got a free brew (As it took 1.5 hours) and the general attention to detail was as good as possible.  "???" seem to be getting their act together.

They did try and drum up more business and suggest I consider a full set of Discs and pads, with pads replacement for life, but I declined.  The discs are not that bad at all, and the pads are last October fit.

Yep, that's the gang. So, I'm getting a full, genuine BMW system fitted for under £250. You can't really grumble about that now, can you?
